SW 29-2 problem. Update bottom of page
I went to the local gun store to browse and I saw a SW 29-2 4 inch bbl.I asked to look at it and checked it out very well.
No push off
No end shake
No excessive wear looks new
No flame cut
No cracked forcing cone
Timing perfect
Double action and single action worked fine
No rust at all.
The gun looks absolutely mint. I paid $1059 out the door tax and background check.
It was very dirty. Looked like it was shot 50 rounds and not cleaned. The presentation box velvet was in the gun a bit. Cylinder ect. Came with the presentation box but all velvet was stripped out of it. This probably prevented rust cause I think it was stored in it.
I took it home and cleaned it real well. Opened the side plated and no rust and cleaned it perfectly. Looks new.
The issue I am having is sometimes when I put the gun in single action and dry fire it,when I release the trigger the trigger has a slight problem resetting. It does it in double action too. Not all the time on both. That's why I didn't catch it in the store. It also happens when the cylinder is out while cleaning. I think it is something in the side plate.
What do you think it is? Am I screwed? Need advice.
SN N79xxx doing it by memory. I think I dated it to 1980
Thanks

could be someone clipped on the trigger return spring(saw this a lot in days gone by) or it may just be dirty and need a good internal cleaning to remove dried oils, etc. over the years. Whatever it is, appears minor in nature.

I agree with the rebound spring theory.. also check the strain screw.
May have been changed out and is a touch light. New ones are not expensive.

I am going to try the spring. Can I use a wolf spring from midway? The strain screw looks original and very tight. I am upset because I bought it because it is in unbelievable condition and I checked it out thoroughly and now I have this issue. I was not intending to buy a gun but it presented itself and I couldn't walk away.

There are several different weight springs available for the rebound slide, The factory is normally a 16 lb. I find a 14 lb enhances the trigger pull a little bit, but still provides good reliable reset.

Hello zzz, for goodness sake dont fret. Its only $1059. Just clean the
guts and put them all on the bench. Now the fun begins. Best.

a good cleaning and a new trigger return spring would be my advice . I have used Wolf springs , both trigger return and main spring with good luck . Be sure and use the proper screwdriver when taking off the side plate . A std screwdriver is the best way to get a deep scratch in the side of your nice new gun as it won't fit and slips out and rakes across the side plate . Walmart has a cheapie set from China marked " Winchester " for something like less than $10 . They are hollow ground , the set includes many different sizes .

If you put it in your post, I missed it - but before I started changing springs I'd shoot it at least 50 rounds, and see if you still have a problem.

"A slight problem resetting"
I think that can happen if you manipulate the trigger a little too slowly. It does sound like a minor problem.
I agree with the "clean it, oil it, shoot it" advice. I'll bet the problem goes away.

I did clean it very well. In and out. I opened the side plate and flushed it out well. I took the hammer out. I did not take the trigger out. I do want to shoot it with some factory loads. I will try the rebound spring. I need to get set up with 44 reloading stuff so I can make some nice mild pleasant loads.
Thanks for your help.

Since you are contemplating replacing the trigger rebound spring anyway, remove the trigger, rebound slide & spring and clean and lubricate. Quite often, dried oil causes the slide to bind against the frame. Clean this area thoroughly, re-lubricate lightly, reassemble & try it again. Should solve your problem. It probably sat for a very long time without use.

Ah. Once you've been inside and removing parts, my prior advice is null and void
Good luck with your 29.

Bob, congratulations on buying one of S&Ws finest revolvers. I don't want to seem flippant but, I can't understand how you think that you thoroughly cleaned the mechanism when you only removed the hammer. It seems to me that you are only about half done. Did you lightly lubricate the hammer and trigger studs or put a drop of oil on the sear engagement surfaces? How about cleaning the rebound slide inside and out and lightly lubricate it and the spring, as well as the part of the frame that it slides over? A gun that is as old as yours may never have been cared for internally and dried oil and dirt can cause problems. I hope that this helps you resolve your difficulties.

Update
Years ago I bought my first smith. A model 66-3 2 1/2 bbl brand new. I remember trying rebound springs after reading these post. Years ago we didn't have wolf and the kits like today so you would cut the spring. I bought a few from smith. I looked in my box a parts and I found the cut spring. In that bans was one that looked uncut. I counted 17 coils. That is what matched the spring in the 29-2.
I can feel a more positive return on the trigger. It snaps back like it wants to reset and it does reset. I cleaned and lubed the rest of the insides.
I think it is fixed. I will try it soon with ammo. If I gave an issue I might buy a wolf kit and try them.
Thank you for all your help. I really appreciate it. I am glad I didn't discover this in the store cause I would have passed on this gem. Thanks again.
