Shiny Model 19 front sight notches
I haven't seen this before but of course that means nothing. I recently acquired this beauty and noticed the front sight notches look possibly factory but not sure. Also note the little red insert;

I have never seen a factory S&W sight like that. I have never seen a model 19 with anything butt a ramp, but maybe they mad some with patridge.
I think some one filed the top down flat, then rear of the sight square as I can see marks on the ramp and then fined in the notches. Not a bad job on the notches but, should have cleaned up marks on ramp.

Thanks, though I've seen plenty with the Patridge front sight. Just never with the grooves. Inside the grooves look nickeled, but the gun hasn't been re-nickeled, so it's kind of curious.

Seen pics of that style of front sight for long range shooting .......like the chicken,turkey, ram, pig thing....... to get consistent "hold over"

Seems unlikely to be factory, a letter might help.
I am aware that some folks (Ed McGivern for one(moment of reverence here)) were partial to similar front sight arrangements for long-range shooting of the .357.

Is the face nickel plated? Or bare steel?
If this is a factory alteration I would expect it to be nickel plated. If bare steel, my guess would lean towards it being done aftermarket.

That's the thing; it is nickel plated and the gun itself is factory nickel and has NOT been refinished.
BTW this is a 6" barrel gun in case you can't tell from my ****** pics.

Your Combat Magnum appears to either be a 19-3 or a 19-4,
Most (not all) six inch barrel 19-3 & 19-4's came with the Patridge front site style, IMO your 3rd pic hints the site had a file used on it.
The notches were also done after it left the factory.
