Default Should I take the plunge on this Model 57???

Price is $600+ Tax and BGC. 6" barrel. Serial # S318806. My best research puts it at a late 60's model... Some minor fading of the bluing near the front of the barrel, and a few other minor scratches and scuffs... The grips are a real disappointment.

Thoughts and opinions, please...

At that price buy it, you will never look back. Once it is yours someone here will come along and help with the stocks.

I can see your pictures. You didn't mention barrel length.

At $600, I think you are on the high side. The 57 looks nice from the poor pics. I would be torn if I really wanted one. AH! just wait for something better. Un-less it comes down to below $480. Diamond Magna grips about $80-$100, Or a set of Target grips, Your move.

For a S number 57 without wood,$600.00 is still a great price.

Are you already into .41 magnum? If so, then yes. Do you want to get into .41? If so, then probably yes. Are you unsure about getting into .41? If so, I'd spend the money on a nice vintage S&W in a caliber of your choice.

Looks like a good deal to me . You wont find another one in that condition for less money , that's for sure . Finding a decent P & R model 57 for under $ 800 bucks just doesn't happen very often.
At $ 600, you can't go wrong . That's only a few dollars more than what run of the mill beat up model 19s are selling for .

Default That is a decent deal on that gun.

Not great, but decent. I have three of the 6" model 57s. They are great guns. If I did not have three already, I would buy it from what I can see.

Default Model 57

At $600 bucks for a S numbered 57 you can't go wrong. Buy it, if you're not satisfied I'll give your money back and pay the shipping. They're beautiful hand guns. They fit in that odd-ball nitch between .357s and .44 mags. Be warned they're addictive.

Excellent advice right there.

I have no 41 magnums and don't especially want one, so I'd probably pass myself. But to each his own.

As for the grips, they may be a disappointment to look at, but those are actually great for shooting - at least for me.

I think it is a good price. I'd be tempted but hopefully would be strong. I do not need another .41. On the other hand, my .44s might be slightly too big for medium size black tails and a blued 6" .41 might be just right.

S&W got .41 Magnum throat dimensions right from the start. If you get along well with the recoil they tend to be one on the easiest S&W offerings to get tiny groups from. Assuming you are a reloader, it would be a good choice. If you have to buy factory cartridges I'd pick something less expensive to shoot.

The 41 mag is my weak spot first off and the 57 is my favorite. In this part of the world that is an excellent price for what I see in your pictures. I would have to see it first hand to see exactly how much wear, having a number of them already. More than likely it would join the herd at that price.

For $600 you really can't lose.

There are TONS of options out there for grips that you can get later.

How often do you see them up for sale? I rarely do. Not looking really hard though. I would be very tempted at that price. Did you try price negotiation? Let us know how you make out. Bob

@Duckfood,

Considering the condition, and how the market appears in my area, if I were looking for another 57, I would jump on it without a second thought. Right after my first shooting session with my 57, I went looking for a pair of Pachmyers. I don't feel that they detract from the value of the revolver, but add to the utility. The physical condition is not really all that bad, in my opinion.

The only way that I would not make the purchase is if I were looking for a collectable to hide in my safe, but that is not me. I purchase handguns to fill a specific shooting niche.

41 for 600.00 cash. 41 here in Louisiana is in the 1000.00 range. I would buy it. Stocks will pop up as fast. or just post here.

I would insist on seeing the metal condition under the Pachmayrs. Rust and rubber seem to like each other.

I don't know what part of the country you're from but, I haven't seen a S prefixed model 57 priced at $480 in my part of the country in several decades. Some think every N frame with diamond serice grips are all the current rage but, not correct for this pistol?

A little polish will fix the fading blue. It would be in my safe growing roots already. With some S&W wood you could maybe double the price if she cleans up good.

The prices on the n frames in any barrel length is going out of sight it's silly. Repeat any n frame that's under $1,000 was once a buy now it's a steal considering the condition of the finish. The shooter, beaters are still drawing good cash. Yours is no shooter, beater.

Careful following that advice. You don't want to do it too often.

There was a recent thread about the dangers of buying for resale and the potential to be considered a "dealer" by the BATF

Just sayin....

I'd pay that and then shoot a bunch of rounds through it. I'm kinda fond of .41 mags and have several.

I have been looking for a shooter grade 57 for a long time now. My experience has been 57's come in two flavors when for sale. Near mint or beat up. But always at a premium price.
If I was not stuck on 4" guns that one would be in my safe already. At that price, I would be tempted to try the longer tube. I could always get my money back and more if it didn't suit me.

Long overdue update...

After initially passing on this gun, someone put the gun in layaway, made a few payments, and then stopped... The shop defaulted of the plan, and was putting back on the wall for sale... A buddy at the shop texted me saying that it was available again, and wanted to know if I was interested... I ended up putting in layaway for a couple of months and picked it up this past weekend... I haven't had the opportunity to shoot it yet...

@Duckfood,

Personally, I think that you made the right move. Just because it is marked Magnum, doesn't mean that it has to live on a steady diet of Magnums. I put together a nice handload with a hardcast Lyman 210gr SWC over a light but safe load of 231, and it shoots just like a K38. Keep in mind, you will never lose out on the deal, you can always sell it and turn a profit if you don't like it!

You won't regret the purchase!
One of the most under-rated calibers and a pleasure to shoot!

If you don't reload, I suggest LAX for ammo. I don't remember the specs on their house brand but this old gal can shoot it just fine.
The Model 57 is a great gun.

Out here Cabelas would pay $750 for that and list it at $1199. I could get that one at a gun show for around $900 maybe. Glad You jumped on it. Great purchase. Like others have said, if You don't like it post it for sale here and make a profit.

I'd say you must live a charmed life. You passed on it and ended up with it anyway... ?

Put an extra $5 in the collection plate next time it comes by.

I have 4 , 41magnums . 3 Smiths and One Ruger . I would take that deal in a heart beat as I don't have an " S " model yet . I and my sister are both real 41 fans . It's about all she will shoot anymore .

Glad you bought it Duck - I have been on the lookout for a shooter grade model 57 for some time. It seems that everytime one comes up, it gets snatched up before I can make a move (read that as permission from my wife).

Welcome to Club .41! Congrats on the buy; it's not often to get a second chance. PawnGal's recommendation on LAX ammo is excellent; they have a 210gr plated load @ 1000 fps. I've shot at least 400 rounds of it... much more like a .44 Special load than a .44 Mag, and nicely accurate. The brass is new Starline, so it's prime reloading fodder. Reed's Ammo & Research has several .41 Mag loads in stock, including a Gold Dot and a Barnes XPB load , a few .41 Special loads, and brass & components if you want to start with new brass. Enjoy the new gun!

You made a good choice finalizing the buy at $600. With the Pachy's on it you are ready to go shooting, and with the addition of a set of period correct Targets for an additional $80-$100 you will still be under market if you decide .41MAG is not for you and you want to sell.

You got some good advice here. Glad it worked out.

Enjoy.
