Default Passed on a beautiful 25-5 today

Really nice gun. Looked new. Original box, paperwork and tools. Action felt incredible. Not sure if it had been worked on, but it was smooth as butter. Almost felt like a Python.

I went home to get a .452 bullet, went back and dropped it into the chambers. It fell through without even touching the walls.

Such a damn shame... But if it isn't going to shoot right, I don't want it. Why, oh why did S&W screw up those chamber throats?

Well, I'm sure this gun will make a collector very happy. My search for a .45 Colt gun continues.

How much? They make replacement cylinders with the proper diameter throats......... if the price is right on the pistol.

If the price was right I'd go back. I've got four 25-5s, all but one have oversize throats and all shoot equally well. Plated bullets work well in all four. This one in hard chrome is the most recent 25-5 acquisition, a .452 bullet drops through the cylinder, but shoots as well as I can hold. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another if the price was right. Good luck.

I bought one new back in the mid-1980's with the wood presentation box and even the cardboard box the whole thing came in. It got unloaded pretty fast, as in sold off. I just didn't care for the long barrel and the weight of the gun. Now, if it had been a snub, I'd probably still have it today. . .never saw a short barrel one for sale back then.

I found that the traditional factory loaded .45 Colt, especially the Winchester 255 grain lead bullet, shot very well from the early Model 25-5. I added a .454" lubrisizing die for an old Colt SAA belonging to a friend and soon found it easier to just size all my heavy .45 cast bullets to that size, finding they shot well in both old Colts and newer S&W's, even the .45 Auto Rims intended for my 1955's.

Commercial cast bullets in .454" are now readily available. I find no reason to avoid an early 25-5. My 4 incher is one of my favorite revolvers.

What makes you think your bullet was .452"? Without a small hole telescoping gauge and micrometer one can never be sure.

Yes, Mike the bullet, lots of .451 cap bullets around. Plus, as said easy to get or make .454 bullets. Or make a better cylinder from a 44 mag cylinder which are readily available

I could be wrong, but I sincerely doubt that a projectile that is half a thousandth under-sized all the way around is going to "drop through" a cylinder. It is incredibly hard to align the projectile that perfectly when attempting the "drop test".

But I WILL agree that the fix is to cast your own from a .454" nominal mould, then run them through a .455" sizer die or similar, to eliminate swaging them down.

I have one of the older 25-5s in 4", and it is abysmal with .452" projectiles, but I typically cast pretty hard. Maybe something softer would obturate well and solve the problem. Just haven't gotten around to playing with it...

Now test it with a .454" bullet. If a .454" is difficult to push through, I'd get it.

My problem was a .454" would fall through my cylinder. They were .456".

This is from my first and only M25.
It has oversized cylinder throats, so much so that a .452 bullet drops right through. I bought it in spite of having this issue because I wanted one and got a good deal on it.

Here's the the results from the first outing ever.
Bullets were .452 diameter.
Target shot two hands holding the gun.
I was quite pleased with it to say the least.
All six bullets in the same hole.

I don't recall now, but my 25-5 45 Colt groups were substantially larger than my 25-2 45 ACP, which I still have. Even so, I would have kept the 25-5, but the hammer pin broke loose and it went back to S&W. The reblue was splotchy, so down the road it went.

Yes it is, as well as concerns about oversize throats.

My post was about oversize throats and how, at least on my revolver, did not affect accuracy, or very minimally at best.

Aside from the dash number all things remain the same with regard to oversize throats.

Based on what the OP said, if the price was right, I'd make it mine.
