17-3 with box and manual value
Have not owned a K22 in a while. Local has a 1975 17-3, 6 inch, for sale with original box and manual. Does not have target trigger, hammer or stocks. Says fired very little.
Price is $750
That seems high to me and completed search on GB has not proved very helpful. All thoughts appreciated.

I just picked up a Smith & Wesson model 18-3 about the same vintage as the one you looking at. I paid $650 for just the revolver, the service grips were numbered to this gun, so that's a plus. Pretty happy with mine as it's in very nice shape 95%, even better than the seller discribed imo.
If you want the whole package, and don't mind the service (narrow) trigger & hammer and grips I'd say your seller is right in the ballpark. If it's not exactly what your looking for, then don't.

From what I have been seeing that's a pretty good price. If it's what you want I would get it. They aren't getting any cheaper. All 17's I have seen lately have been $800 and up. I did see one for $700 no box that I would rate at about 85%.

A 17-3 in 95% condition with the original box and papers goes for $825 to $850 in Western PA depending on stocks, hammer and trigger. Guns in lower condition showing more wear with no box seem to sell for $600 to $650, if you see one.

Any sense how much the lack of target trigger, hammer and stocks affect the price?

Examined the gun and found it like new. Still in original box with S&W wrapping and S&W warranty card, sales brochures for knives and holsters, manual, cleaning kit(never used). Grandson of original buyer says grandfather shot it a few times and put it away. Service grips seem small for my hands(the only number on the grips is the first digit of the serial number--they clearly had never been removed).
Tried researching correct target grips for 1975 K22 but could not find precise answer.
Are the target grips with the speed loader cutout correct for this year ?

Wow, that is a lot of cash for a 17-3. All complete like this one, probably not out of line. Any wiggle room at all? Down here in FL, see them at shows at $800 and go home with the owner. Best.

Period-correct target stocks would have the "football" recess on the left panel.

I think 750.00 is fair, the Model 17's are real nice revolvers and seem to holding value., I would try 650 and maybe meet in the middle at 700.00
Good luck

You can pick up some period factory target "football thump cutout" grips around for 100-150 depending on what condition you would like to have. Try this guy his ebay user name is rogers-guns-grips feedback (13015 ) I highly recommend him, his name is Jim Rogers. Honest and fair and has a selection second to no one in the entire United States.

I don't think you need a separate shooter-grade K-22. Shooting the 17-3 won't put any marks on it except a light turn line on the cylinder. I clean mine after shooting and it looks good as new. These revolvers are made to be enjoyed.

Like others have said the price is a fair price with the box and all so it's just how bad do you want it.

I shoot my 92-95% 1951 K-22 from time to time and it cleans up looking just like it always has. Just be careful where you set the gun down, darn grit on a hard surface has scratches more firearms than just about anything.

Personally,I'd be buying a set of Kurac's grips long before I'd cough up 100-150 just for the notion of having factory "period original" targets on it.(and I did,for my 17-4)
The factory grips shouldn't command more than 75, given their quality and feel.

Bought it.
Found another 17-3 down the road with target hammer, trigger and grips(not period correct but ok) Clearly shot a lot more and not as pristine. No box or anything else. 1969 serial number. Looks like it can be bought for less. May take a look just for fun.
Like collecting M52 Winchesters, or Pythons(when they were reasonably priced), this K22 collecting could be additive.
Camster--not familiar with Kurac's grips. Will take a look

The SCSW 4th. edition shows the model 17 ANIB at $900.00, and $750.00 in excellent condition.

The one I bought is clearly ANIB.
Looked at the other 17-3--nice tight gun but marks on metal and blueing wear in a number of spots.
