Please tell me about 1973 Highway Patrolman 28-2
I have the opportunity to purchase
28-2
1973
Ser. No. N 105xxx
3.5 or 4 inches
Original box
Excellent used condition
Here are the questions
1. Did not take off the Magna grips. Should they be numbered to gun?
2. What were the shorter barrel lengths?
3. What was quality of 1973 28-2's?
4. Did not see box. Should box be numbered to gun?
5. Approximate value assuming original box and grips?
Thank you in advance

It all sounds good! The only thing you did not mention, was price. I have a 28 no dash from 1960. It is a 6". Sure would not mind having a 4" myself. Let us know how you make out! Bob

We saw two 28-2 at the Wannemacher show today. One was purported NIB, 4", looked pristine for $2500. Saw a 'shooter' one that had some honest wear around the muzzle and some other dings for $650 cash, no box, prominent turn ring and some end shake. Seller was not certain if trips were original and I didn't feel like taking them off.
Did I mess up by passing up a shooter 28-2 or was there not enough of a deal there?

On the first one, Seller must have been smoking some of that smelly green tobacco to ask $2.5k for an M28-2 even if NIB / pristine / Belonged to Mr. Wesson himself / ...
As for the shooter with end shake etc. that he wouldn't even remove the stocks from -- you can find a better one from a more motivated seller at a lower price. So pass ...

Excess movement of the cylinder from forward to back. About .001-.003 is normal a bit more functional and much more can cause problems like cylinder dragging on forcing cone of barrel and even poor timing as the cylinder ratchet moves forward away from the hand. Not hard to repair, but it is possible to end up with excess gap between cylinder and barrel which is more difficult to repair.

Learn something new everyday! Thanks, now that it's been described I can identify some of those characteristics in revolvers I have examined and shot, in the past. I was not familiar with the terminology
