Pre-Lock Model 60 Question
I'm looking at a "mint" pre-lock model 60. The gun is priced at $600 and I would appreciate any thoughts on that price. Also, any date information you may have on pre-lock model 60's would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your time and help in this area...it's appreciated.

The model 60 (no dash) was offered over a long period and in different configurations, need pics or at least a serial to answer your question.

To extrapolate a bit the first Model 60's were introduced in the early 1960's with SS internals, by the mid 60's they switched to case colored Hammer trigger and by around 1970 the hammer / trigger changes to flash chromed.
By the early 1980's the barrel set pin is deleted and the serial changes to alpha prefix , there were also ltd runs of SB's and 3" Model 60 versions.
Basically an early NIB Model 60 with box and docs would sell for quite a bit more than one made in 1981 with no box or docs wearing rubber replacement grips in rough shape.

I don't know when the lock was first introduced on S&W revolvers but
the model 60 came out around 1965 and was made for many years
before the locks were added to S&W revolvers. A pre-lock mod 60 is
hardly a rarity as there are many thousands of them out there floating
around. The seller is trying to take advantage of your naivete in my
opinion as $600 is way too much for any used mod 60. Nice cond.
pre-lock mod 60s are common and can usually be bought for $400-
$450 easily. The mod 60, like other J frames is often carried or kept
for home defense but seldom fired so there are many out there with
very low round count. Take a little time to look around before you buy.

Concur. The only two things I can think of that might (slightly) elevate the $450.00 price would be if the Model 60 came with the original box with tools and documents, and if it were a Model 60-7. Most Model 60 fans consider the Model 60-7 to be the best version of the Model 60 ever produced. I owned one briefly before trading it for another firearm, and I still miss it.
Regards,
Dave

Just got a 3 inch round butt 60 in the last 6 weeks delivered to my paw for $440. It IS a 38 spec NOT 357 Mag. A nice older gun.

A run of the mill Model 60 at $600 is overpriced but a LNIB gun from 1965 is a steal at $600.

The ONLY version of the J Frame that is worth that much (at least to me) would be the M60-7 in 99%+ condition with original box & papers. A run of the mill J even in mint condition should be $500 or less unless it is unfired in original box with all accoutrements. Then maybe slightly higher! The S&W J Frame 2" snubby is certainly NOT rare!
