So, I've been trying to find a nice model 15/67 for a while. Not much in my local area, so I've been browsing the auction sites. Found a few on Gunbroker that went for more money than I could spend

So I started looking at used Model 10/64's. Found an auction for LEO trade in 64's from Southern Police Equipment Supply and gave them a call. Talked to a nice fellow named Neil, who said he would find a nice one and send pics before he shipped. Got the pics late Fri and it looked to be in very good condition with not many use marks except for wood grips-look like they were banged around a bit. No big deal, as grips can be easily found/changed.

Hoping to get tracking info today and pick up maybe Wed. Not sure what "dash" number it may be, but it is a pre lock model. This is my first revolver purchase in a lot of years, and still looking for a model 15/67. Will post pics when it arrives. Price was $329 + $40 2 day shipping. Will be $20 transfer fee at LGS but no sales tax. So $389 total. Not a great deal, but an acceptable deal if in the condition it appears to be in.

Did model 64's ever even have a lock?

I bought one eons ago and carried it in Dallas while working security. It was a nice .38 spl. revolver.

It has arrived - Smith 64 'Airweight' Custom, Semi-Fitzed Snubby

The DAO revolver is the one that I had customized. The other is just a really nice Model 64. You'll enjoy it. As you can see one has a lock and one does not.

Sounds like you did okay. The 64 is an excellent stainless revolver and my experience with police trade-ins has been good. Most were carried a lot but not shot much.
Is that Southern Police Equipment Supply in Richmond, Virginia? They're good folks, I bought a nice police trade SIG 220 there last winter and am very happy with the deal.

Yes, that's the place, Neil seemed very nice and helpful and was on top of getting in touch with my FFL. Waiting for tracking info. now, so I know when to pick it up here in Indiana

This will keep My Dad's Nickel Model 10 company, but I plan on shooting this one a lot! Will probably add a blue Model 10 some time down the road, but really want a 4" Model 15/67, more for the adjustable sights. I always loved revolvers, shot them a lot back when they were "king"

This is a 64-6 DAO. One of my favorite range guns; POA to POI is spot on at 10 yards, trigger is butter smooth. IMO the 64 and 65 are just really nice all business revolvers

UPDATE: Picked up my model 64 this evening, pictures when I can locate my camera lol. Turns out to be a 64-3 with serial #AJA09XX. Revolver is in very nice shape cosmetically and is nice and tight and functions just as it should. I am very pleased at this point and can't wait to get to the range and see how she does!

So if anyone could help date my revolver, I'd sure appreciate it :-)

When I checked the bore with a bore light, it looked like a mirror! This gun couldn't have been shot very much-its very, very clean! :-)

Sounds like 1985 with the AJA prefix. Actually nobody knows for sure without a letter; and, a letter will only tell you when it shipped, not when it was manufacturer. Here's one of my 64's. They are neat guns.

Police guns are often in very well cared for condition. Carried daily but not shot much and usually maintained by a factory certified armorer.


As you note, the stocks can take a beating, especially going in and out of cars, sometimes in an emergency-type situation.

Like the Models 19 and 65, the 64 is as near an all-purpose revolver as you could want, in my old-fashioned opinion. Nearly always good shooters, too.

These were trade in guns from VA DOC. Most of them had ugly electropenciled institution names and numbers. DOC is transitioning to the Glock 23. They should be getting close to completion.
Town Police here in Richmond had a bunch of cherry 2" M64s that the wardens were issued. Most were pristine and sold for less than $400. Still regretting not buying one...

I had seen some examples that had etchings on the sides/side plates and specifically requested one without any, I was pleased that Neil found a nice one without any. To say I am pleased would be an understatement-the gun itself has very little wear and the bore looked like a mirror with a bore light shining through it! The grips (stock magnas) do show some dings but are not numbered to the gun. Not sure when S&W stopped that, since this appears to be app. 1985 vintage.

Range report from 12-10-2016

Had an opportunity to shoot the model 64 at the indoor range. Wasn't sure what to expect, so was pleasantly surprised when I cleaned the X out of a reduced B-27 @ 5 yards with a reload of 158 gr. LSWC behind 3.5 grs. of Red Dot. No, 5 yards is not a long distance, but was what I wanted to start with using a new to me revolver. first 5 rounds Single Action, 2nd 5 rounds Double Action (yes, very stiff DA pull). All 10 rounds in one centered cluster :-) So I finished the 50 rounds into 2 targets-SA & DA with the same results. I also fired 18 rounds of Freedom Munitions 158 gr. plated RNFP and those also found their mark on target. The FM rounds had quite a bit more recoil and wow, what a muzzle flash! Probably won't buy any more of the FM ammo, but will start loading some of their plated bullets myself.

Been a While since I loaded and shot any 38 specials, forgot how much fun it was! I bought this to be a shooter, and it sure is! Will be working up some WC loads for me and my girlfriend to have fun with. She didn't mind shooting the 64, but doesn't like my FS M&P 9 at all.

FYI, still haven't located the camera, but when I do..... :-)

I can se how they could "multiply" quickly, lol The 64 matches My Dads Model 10-8; with 4" H.B. in Nickel. I can see adding a blue model 10 to the collection K frames can be quite the addiction!

I only have 1, 10 right now. Got it in March of this year. A 10-5, 2" round butt. More accurate than I thought it would be. Fun to shoot also. Possibilities are endless for adding new Smiths. (well, maybe money) Bob

Model 64's and 65's are my favorite K frames.

I like fixed sight K frame Smiths. Picked up a 65-5 police trade in today from a local cop shop. Tag said M64 .38 and was marked $299.
Showed the tag and gun to the salesperson and he verified that the marked price was correct. I almost broke my arm whipping out the Visa card. This is my fifth fixed sight K frame and the first .357 I have had since the early '90s when I turned in my Smith M64 .357 for Austrian Tupperware.

I've got a 64-0 4" pencil barrel and a 65 3" marked BRPD (Baton Rouge). Two of my favorite revolvers. I recently went for a 4 wheeler ride with the 64 strapped on. As I left my son was dressing some rabbits he had killed. When I got back I handed him another to clean. Head shot at about 30 yards.

Very nice, but what's wrong with the barrel? It looks all swollen!

Yeah, apparently I have the same affinity (affliction?). I have a 4 inch no dash slender barrel, a 3 inch -3, a 4 inch -3, and a 4 inch -5 NY-1.
They are all great shooters and I love 'em all.

Just put on on layaway at Bud's today!

I won a $50 gift certificate in a drawing. Applied that to the cost and it looks like I'll get a heavy barrel DAO M64 delivered to my local FFL for $280.

Too good a deal to pass up.

I mounted a Millet SP-1 red dot sight on my model 64 LEO trade in, with a 4 inch heavy barrel and with 2.8 grains of bullseye under a Lyman #358432 160 grain cast wadcutter it will shoot 15 shots into a 1 inch circle at 25 yards...one big ragged hole.
The model 64 can be extremely accurate and with a trigger job, is just a sweet shooting thing. I've won a few trophies at our local range with this rig. I would bet money that you're going to like it ! Nice score , you did good !

I have a M15 and M67 already. Didn't really need the 64, but when Bud's sent me a message telling me I'd won a $50 gift certificate, I started browsing.

The M64 was in their used inventory for $323. Out the door for less than $330, minus $50=too good a deal to let slip away.

It's a stainless S&W .38 for $280. What's not to like about that deal?

They are great shooters and will clean up nicely with some mother's mag polish if you want a little more shine. Here is mine i picked up last year for $399 and shined up. I put some Altamont target round to square comversion's on.

This old thread came along just as I am looking at a 64-2. Thought it would be nice to add one to the pile. I have a 66 and the 64 I am looking at is a good deal at 400 dollars. I would have to drive a couple of hours but I think it would make a great addition to the 66.

Model 64-5 came in today. Cosmetically challenged, but mechanically sound. Gave it a good cleaning and put on some new grips. No time to remove the sideplate and get inside tonight. Will do that over the weekend. I'm betting the inside is full of gunk. Action feels pretty good though.

Interesting note: it's a round butt. Didn't notice in the Bud's ad, but no big deal. I had some round butt Hogues in the pile.......

Can't wait to get it out and shoot it.

I doubt the round butt impacts the value much, but at $280 in my hands, it's a shooter and I'm very happy with it......

I tried to trade my Buddy out of his 64-3 with 3" barrel. I can't understand why he didn't jump on my 40 cal Shield trade offer. :-)
