Default Model 28-2 Trigger Stop Rod?

Every once in a while I give my 28-2 a thorough cleaning and lubrication, and since its been about 1000 rounds since its last major cleaning, I decided today would be a good day to do so. While working on it, I started to hear a rattle I have never heard before. I though initially it might be the hammer block, but after removing the side plate and hammer block, I could still hear the rattle. The sound appeared to be coming from within the rebound slide, and I started to get concerned. Before I tore into it further, I consulted the parts schematic on Numrich's site for the 28 and several other N-Frame models to see if anything was supposed to be there, but nothing is shown but the slide and its spring. Using extreme care, I removed the rebound slide and a small pin fell out from within. Research suggests that this is a trigger stop pin, but I am a bit confused about it, as it doesn't appear to serve any purpose in my 28-2. I still hear it rattling whether the trigger is depressed or not. Was this an original part for this gun or an after market addition? My 28-2 came into my possession sporting all the hallmarks of aftermarket work including a full action polish, which I had to correct a little bit for hammer push-off, along with a trigger that had been polished smooth, removing the serrations from the trigger face.

I am inclined to keep this rod out of the gun unless anyone has any reason why I should re install it.

Thanks for the advice and Happy Holidays.

The purpose of the pin is to act as a trigger stop. Some had them and some did not. If it bothers you just leave it out, it will not change the performance any.

Thanks, that's what I figured. After I posted, I did some more investigation while I still have the gun opened up, and it appears that my initial assessment that it was not making contact when I pulled the trigger was incorrect. It appears that it is properly fit, so I have decided to put it back in.

Please understand that I am not bothered by it, I was just a little concerned as I have had the gun for a while now, and had not previously noticed the sound of the pin sliding around in there, nor do I recall seeing the rod when I had the gun apart to correct the aforementioned hammer push-off problem.

Thanks again.

The pin should have a round end and a square end. The round end should go in first and the square end is supposed to bump against the rebound spring pin. As you noted, seldom are these of much use as an overtravel stop. But, they certainly do no harm. I leave all mine installed.
