Default S&W model 36 identification

help to id and interesting info:

when my grandfather passed i inherited his guns. i kept his 38 special for a few reasons. first, because it was his and secondly because he'd had it since 1976. thirdly, and the most interesting part for me is the Cook County, Il registration tag still with the gun from 1976. of course the gun issue had been a hot topic in Illinois so having that document just makes it all the cooler.

now for the gun: the markings, 38 S.&W. Special 'ctg' on the 3" barrel, nickel finish, J123983 on the butt, Mod. 36 40287 by the cylinder. theres also a 'G16" stamped next to the 40287 which I'm wondering if that is a S&W marking or a department marking, as I'm told this is a 'captains special'. it appears the J number dates it to 1972-73.

its a nice piece, been in my family a long time and ill e keeping that way. just thought i might get better dating for it and share the story.

thanks, dan.

Welvome to the Forum. You are quite a ways off from selecting the correct section, since this is the antique section. You should check out the http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-revolvers-1961-1980/ section.

I will ask that a moderator move your thread to that section so you will get their expert comments.
