10-5 with One Serial Number
I have a 1969-1970 10-5 in Nickel that is missing the serial number stamped on the yoke. Only the frame butt has the serial number. I do not see evidence that the SN was removed but my eyes are old.
Anyone have a theory on the gun having only the one SN?
Also, are these stocks correct for a 10-5? No numbers just the K stamped on each.
Thanks for the help! Excuse the poor photos.

At the time your revolver was made the grip frame was the ONLY part of the frame that was stamped with the serial number, so what you have is 100% normal and 100% legal. Cannot comment on the stocks, every S&W I have has rubber grips mounted. However based on the amount of wear at a guess I would say they are original and that revolver was likely carried daily.

I had to look at my 10-5, and looks like yours, no serial number on the yoke. About the grips, they appear correct. I believe the diamonds on the grips went away after 1968. Is your gun Nickel or blue, it's hard to tell by the pics?

It wasn't until the late 70s . . . when target stocks became the norm . . . that S&W added the s/n to the yoke cutout of the frame.
I would have guessed that original stocks in the 1969-1970 period would still have the s/n on the backside of the right panel . . . seem to remember that s/n going away in the mid-70s.
In any event, that's a very nice 10-5 you have there . . . a fine revolver that will last many life-times . . . enjoy.

The information I have indicates S&W stopped stamping the serial numbers on the wood stocks in 1979.
I have three Model 10-5 revolvers with one being Factory nickel. All have matching serial numbers with the butt frame.
I can only assume yours has later stocks than the revolver.
P.S. - They only stamped the numbers of the serial number and not letters like the D Prefix on the stocks.

Here is my 10-5 on the left and 10-6 on the right. Both with original
stocks. Hope this helps.

If the stocks are period correct there will be a SN on the back of the right stock, even if it might not match. Push the extractor out and you will find the SN stamped on the back. My 10-5 that is in the D669***range still does have both. Yours is in the D3***** range so definitely should have.
If your stocks just have a K or KR stamped on them they likely are replacements. Since your gun ranges somewhere 1970-1972 the stocks with no diamond are correct period style.
So, you see, your gun does not have "one serial number" unless it is a real oddity.

As was mentioned for the vast majority of its existence the model 10 series did NOT have the serial number stamped inside the yoke. I think this is one of the best forums on the net, but I do wish people would read the stickies and stop posting questions regarding guns using the assembly numbers incorrectly as serial numbers.
