Two factory SN stamps on grip panel ?
This photo is of the grip panels for one of my Models 15. It appears to be two different factory SN stamps on the right grip panel. The top number matches to gun. Why would there be an additional, but different number? Your expert comments are greatly appreciated.s

That is a head scratcher. I have never seen two Sns before or that low on the grip. Could be right as rain, I hope so. Best

They look like two factory stampings, so I would guess the stocks were fitted to two different frames and yours was the second. I've seen a few others.

Thanks murphydog SN 476971 ,which matches the gun, also appears to be an older stamp even though higher SN. Anyway it's interesting that you've seen this before

S&W didnt waste perfectly good stocks,
If a customer wanted to upgrade from magnas to target stocks the Magnas went back into inventory and were refit to another gun,
IIRC We have seen double serial struck Magnas a few times on 28-2 Highway Patrolman revolvers over the years.

Here's another way it happened. Pre 27 magnas with a serial number on each one. The left matches the gun.

I have an M28-2 with two serial numbers on the stocks. Both are stamped, but the one that matches looks a bit more like it was done in haste or free hand. Despite this, I am pretty sure it was done at the factory. Who would bother to fake something like that on such a common gun?
I just assumed it was a case of someone ordering one with target stocks, so they recycled the magnas, like Engine49guy said.
