Default 28-2 With Diamond Targets

As I ran through Milledgeville this morning, I saw a M28-2 laying on the floor behind the counter. Turned out to be a 4 inch with Diamond Targets on it. Really nice. N serial number. I'm guessing late 1960's since it didn't have enough screws to be super early. Maybe the targets shipped on it. . .don't know. I already have two of these things, so I didn't buy. He told me $600 OTD. I'm guessing the grips are worth $200. If you live near Milledgeville and need a 28-2, it's downtown at Baynes. I guess he would give anybody the same price as me. . .maybe, maybe not. It was a pretty one and might still be there.

Wish I lived there. Nice to know there are still some that need loving.

N prefix didn't start until 1969. The fourth screw went away in 1961, while the prefix was still an S. So this one would date from the 1969-1982 period.

Diamond stocks fell out in about 1968, so we would not expect an N prefix gun to have them. But it isn't impossible. On the other hand, my experience with the 4" HP makes it seem unlikely, since most of them shipped with Magna stocks.

$600 OTD
If the gun is in super nice condition and the diamond target stocks are also excellent, the price isn't too far out of line, but it is pushing the upper end, in my humble opinion. And I'm a huge fan of the 4" HP. It's a good thing I live a very long way from Georgia. I'd probably be compelled to buy it if I saw it ...

One question: what the heck was it doing lying on the floor???

LOL. I thought the same thing. When used guns first come in, they have a tendency to put them on the floor behind the counter. I have found some really nice guns that way. After I looked at it, they priced it and put it in the display case. It was an easy 98%. The finish was nicer than what you usually see on a M28. It is good to see prices coming down to reason. A year ago, the word was that any N Frame was pushing $1000. . .way too much for me. Now $600 is pushing the limit. That's good news. I have noticed, and it's the reason why I'm buying so many Smiths the past few months for cheap.

I'm thinking that $600 OTD is very reasonable, especially with the diamond targets. Good thing I'm too far away to go look.

Whether those stocks were on it when it shipped, without a letter who knows? If I bought it, I would be inclined to believe they did, until someone could PROVE otherwise!

Well I've paid more than that for a 28-2. It did come with an old Safariland flap holster, with the numbered stocks and is in great condition though.
I'd definitely go $600 OTD on one as described by OP.

Just because you have two doesn't preclude you from having a third! I would. You use it as trading stock, just on sell it or just shoot it. And the grips are $200...

I agree with Stirling. Assuming this one would be an upgrade, you could always sell one of the others if money is tight.

I have 4 model 28-2. I got 3 of them wearing targets. The only one with diamond targets is an S prefix. One of them has a target trigger and hammer besides the target grips. If I would have seen that one I would probably have 5. LOL

Ditto. Whether I could afford it or not, I would have it.
