38 S & W Special CTG
Serial on Butt Plate is J970287
The letter on end of the five cartridge cylinder is N
Any assistance defining the age, (1982) model # (confirm 36-1 Chiefs Special, nickel finish with a 3" Heavy barrel) and value would be appreciated
I am re-posting with larger pictures

As you indicated "the book" shows 1982. Very nice looking example!

Welcome to the forum! Nice looking revolver. I'm not good at assessing values so hopefully other members will be along shortly to help with that aspect. If it's a family heirloom then it's priceless. The first photo probably doesn't do justice to her condition. Not your fault. Light reflecting off the nickel will do that. Should you want to make her really shine, the suggested method is hand polishing with Flitz using a soft cotton cloth. Buff out by hand with either a clean cloth or microfiber towel. Last apply a coat or two of wax. Renaissance is highly thought of but Johnson & Johnson paste wax works just as well. Buff again. Stick around this place is great. hardcase60

This is the second thread you created about this gun. You received some additional replies on the first thread. Perhaps you lost track of it. Here is a link:

Your first photo here (now larger) does show a Model 36-1. If you open the cylinder and look on the frame in the yoke cut, you will see MOD 36-1.
Incidentally and just FYI, you can reply to your own thread and add pictures without creating a new thread. You will find that is an easier way to keep track of new information about your gun, so you don't have to bounce back and forth between two threads.

And the "N" on the cylinder simply indicates the gun was originally Nickelled. Take off the left stock and you will find another N near the lower, rear corner of the frame.
The Model 36-1 is only one thing, the 3" heavy Barrel variant of the Model 36. All other barrel lengths or tapered barrels are simply a Model 36 or pre-model numbered Chief's Special.
As Jack said, you can reply to your own post, or you can also edit the original post by clicking on the "Edit" button at the bottom of your post. Then you can revise or add text, add/delete photos, etc, just like on a new post. Note the "Last edited" note at the bottom of this post.
