Default Model 53 find

LGS just got a bunch on consignment pistols in from an estate. One of which was a Model 53 8 3/8" WITH a factory 22LR cylinder in the box with two sets of inserts. No paperwork or tools however. What would be a fair price on this? 98% + Box was a bit beat up. I have first dibs so wondering what this might cost me..

I paid about $1000 for a 6", with box, set of inserts and paperwork, no 22lr cylinder about 2 years ago. I would expect what you are describing to go north of $1600 in the DFW area.
Prices are region dependent so maybe a couple of other Calif guys have a better idea on your area.

Model52guy estimate is pretty good I think. I paid $1000 for a 6" with inserts and nothing else recently. There is a 8 3/4" with box on a popular forum listed for $1600 and change but no takers yet. I say with the extra cylinder and the forcing cone is good, $1,400 OTD is a steal.

btw, any other interesting guns from this lot and which LGS is it?
Thanks

The other interesting one to me anyway was a very nice 16-4, 6" correct grips but no box. If I pass I will let you all know where it is at.

Fair value in CA for what you describe, a Model 53 no dash, would be around $2,000. Most long barrel Jets measure 8 1/4 in, not 8 3/8ths. Ed.

I did not measure the barrel, thinking from other models 8 3/8, it is 8"+ anyway good info to know. I need to look at it further, forcing cone, grips and an exact year. It was no dash, grips were the target type with the diamond in the center much like those on my K38. I was actually hoping for a K22, but the 53 is pretty close and a center fire.

I have seen these at guns shows for around $1,800, NIB. The spare 22 cylinder can bring up to $400 on the open market, but it is probably numbered to the gun and you would not want to sell it anyway. I paid $1,200 a few years back for a 1st year 6" M53 NIB, only because the serial number was K 444444. No 22 cyl. About a year later, I paid $1,000 for a NIB, last year of production, with the 8" bbl. I bought these with no intention of ever firing them. Just a good investment. Big Larry

I haven't seen an extra 22lr cylinder sell for less than $500 on any of the auction sites in the last 5+ years. I think you'd be looking at around $2k retail price.

I'm a long time Jet fan. But to shoot them, you really need to reload. There is a low cost supplier of ammo, but its all the same high velocity stuff. Many of us have varied out loads because we've discovered dropping back really extends out case life.

And there are rules. They should be cast in stone, but I've not found that stone. First, any time you see factory Remington ammo cheap, buy it. Anytime you stumble along a gun show and see a partial box (cheap) buy that too. Any time you see .222 bullets, buy them. Any time you see a factory zip lock of new brass, buy it. Then talk to Dave Keith about his grand son's little hobby of resizing .224 bullets. Always keep a gun load of full power factory ammo with the gun. It might be dark outside and the non-believers need to witness shock and awe. Alaska may be he land of the midnight sun, but you can give them a display.

I am a reloader, so no issues there. Bullets seem to be the problem, I have not seen any .222, few .223 for the old Hornets, and everything under the sun at .224. Prvi makes ammo, and it is available but I do not know what the bullet diameter is. I have a 4" .41 and a .44 mag and a stout load of H110 can be pretty impressive as to flash..
The pistol is in "limbo" right now and not available to the public yet. I am going to look at it again and make an offer.

Mine eats the 45gr .223 Sierras like candy. #1110. I load them with H110.

Waiting on the estate to sign the papers, then thanks to all of CA's wonderful rules a 30 day wait for the pistol to clear then a further 10 day wait for me to clear and be able to pickup...

The above is pretty much true but I have NEW brass left over from when I had several of these and it just doesn't move. Who can say.?

Well I have a $1500 offer on the table, barrel is turning plum, couple of scratches on the barrel, 22LR cylinder is not serial numbered, so not original to the pistol. Waiting to see if it will be accepted. Might up it a bit but not much. Supposed to know this week.

Well the estate signed the pistols over to the LGS and my offer of $1500 was accepted for the Model 53. I asked about the 16-4 and they had priced it at $500.. Could not say yes fast enough, a very good day at the LGS for me.. They also have a Model 41 from 1970 in excellent condition but no box or magazine for $800. 7" or so barrel, I passed on that one as I have spent my allowance for at least 6 months..

I found my 53 with the 8 inch barrel and the 22 LR cylinder only. I bought it right and after 2 years of looking I found a Jet cylinder on ebay for about 280 with an extra 6 inch barrel. I sold the barrel and now have a decent combo for a great price.
