Model 38 Idenification, Please?
Hey Guys,
I think I'm in the right place. I would appreciate any help on identifying the approximate year of my S&W Model 38 that I have been carrying for a few years now. As best I can tell the details are as follows:
Model 38 Airweight .38 SPL
SN# 94J738
Blued barrel/cylinder, Powdercoated/Painted frame
1 1/4 in barrel
fixed sights
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.
Looks to be one in the so called floating J serial numbers from 1971/72.

Sir, you are carrying a great little gun. Had mine since 1972. Saved my butt twice. From now on measure the barrel from the face of the chamber to end of Barrel. Year of ship, not a clue. Do not follow them. Best.

Yes. 1971-72 (I would guess the latter, but no bets).
The actual barrel length would be 1 7/8" and was nominally referred to as a 2" barrel.

Thanks Guys!
I was guessing late 70's, but cool to know its actually older than I am (and that there are still things older than me). It's a great gun, carries like a dream, don't think I'd trade it for a brand new model.
Thanks again for the info.

Welcome to the forum from S.C. I carry mine in my right front pocket in a Uncle Mike's #3 With Liberty C.D. 50gr. You forget it is even there!!! Oh, put on a Tyler grip. There are some outstanding member's on this forum. Ask them anything and someone will have a answer. On S&W of course!!!! I don't think Dr. Phil is one.

It is good to see younger guys joining this forum. So many of us are pushing 70 or older. Welcome!
