When did the orange ramp sights become available?
Just curious...ran into an pre model # gun with one, I figured they came along in the '60s at the earliest. Anyone have the answer?

I'm pretty sure it was 1952 that they became an option.

Originally cataloged in early 1952 as the Blanchard (red) ramp, later versions of the 1952 (centennial) catalog listed this sight as the S&W red ramp. This sight, with a white outline rear sight was standard on the 44 Magnum introduced in January 1956. Prior to that, the red ramp was installed on many of the 1950 44 Targets with a 4-inch barrel and was a factory option for the ".357" Magnum.

In my experience, the color varied from a deep red to reddish orange.

I am interested in this question also. They are definitely different than the red ramp sight. The earliest orange front sight I recall, was on the 686 and 586 ramp front sight guns. However, I was not buying many guns in the 70s, so my memory is kinda fuzzy on the orange sights change.

The red ramp sight has somewhat of an orange caste to it.
