Default Manufactured Date

I would like to know the date of a Model 36-2, sn: BBT71xx. I bought it and it came up stolen in 1977 in the state of Ca. The Oregon background people said they did not receive much cooperation from Ca. when talking to them, so now it is going to be taken by the Oregon State Police for destruction. I am told they must first do an investigation, I won't hold my breath. Personally, I think it is a later revolver but am at their mercy.

I would be seeking a refund from the seller!

BBT comes up as 1988, same as the -2 revision. Something wrong here.

Edit: the relevant pages in the 4TH edition of the SCSW are 244 and 491.

Kevin

If you are able to speak to the OSP officer, you might point out to him that a revolver with a BBT serial number could not possibly have been stolen 11 years before it was made.

I'm sure if you reach out to Don Mundell, he could provide the OSP with certification that the gun did not exist in 1977. Heck, the three-alpha serial numbers were not even on the radar in the mid-1970s.

You might want to hold off on asking the seller for a refund, pending the outcome of the investigation. It could be worthwhile letting him know about the problem, but I would not recommend making any demands at this point.

An update. The state police picked up the revolver and then called me. I had an operation in Medford, Or. today, a hundred miles from home. The officer said that in fact the revolver was stolen in 1994, and there was a mix-up with NICS. He talked to the San Jose, Ca. police and they told him the revolver was used in a crime there, and is still not solved.
I managed to track down a friend at the show that knows of the seller and is tracking his name for me. I will then notify the local officer here with the information. For the most part, I do not expect to get the revolver back, and I did manage to strip some of the parts before it was confiscated. Thanks for the replies. I will update if I find anything else.

I understand the gun serial number and description being reported to the police by the owner after it was stolen. What I don't understand is how the police could know that the gun was used in an "unsolved crime". May be one of our LEO could help me out with this.

Waelkhntr, I wonder the same thing myself. Local cop has not returned my call, and this is one of my questions.

Because the owner reported it stolen and the thief was never caught. The case is still open and thus it remains an unsolved crime.
The only possible bright side to this story would be if the original owner got his property back. If he can't be found, it seems only fair for OP to be allowed to keep it.

Paul,
Not sure I agree with your assessment. "He talked to the San Jose, Ca. police and they told him the revolver was used in a crime there, and is still not solved".

That sound like a completely different situation than the original theft of the gun.

Quote: "The officer said that in fact the revolver was stolen in 1994..." We could speculate about any other crimes the gun may have been involved in but this is the relevant detail. If the original owner can be located after 18 years, the gun belongs to him.

Update: I found the name of the seller and notified the police. This weekend I went to a Reno, Nv. gun show and was fortunate to find the seller there. I presented him with a copy of the police report and he returned the purchase price of the revolver. He was upstanding about it and I am glad it is over. Thanks for the replies. I doubt the San Jose, Ca. police do anything about it except destroy the revolver.

San Jose, CA prosecute a crime? That would be a novel approach. Even if they located the thief he would be out in three hours on a no bail. What a hassle for the OP.
