S&W mod 64-5 350.00?

Good price or not,nice cond. pre lock has nice laminated green finger groove S&W logo grips.Need a 38 for shooting,has thick 4 inch barrel.

That's a fair price. Dunno about the grips. If they fit your hands well, you should buy it.

Thanks!I think I will buy it,grips fit me great,not a lot of wear on the gun so not a police trade in.Boy these have went up,seems like I remember them selling for 250.00 10 or so years ago?Anyway was at another gunshop today and the dealer had a 44 629 no dash and was saying the pre lock smiths were worth a lot more than the newer ones with the lock.He was putting it on Gunbroker.That must not apply to the mod 64 38s.

I was buying all sorts of Smiths 3 years ago for $250. Just piling them up. Still do from time to time, although $300 - $350 is the new norm. Prices have come down a lot lately compared to a year ago. Nice M10's are down to around $300. Even got a pre-10 for $200 a few weeks ago and it was made in 1948 and had Sambar Stag grips. Dealers are backing off of on-line auction sites unless the gun is pristine LNIB and highly desirable. The LGS's around here are all loaded up with the old Smiths at prices you can easily afford. . .just like the old days.

Thanks Dr.B sounds like I need to go to Georgia to buy Smiths!Anyway this one looks hardly used,perfect for my shooting needs.Dont think I can wear it out.Dont want a worn out police trade in or an old beater for a shooter,sometimes you get what you pay for.

Went ahead and bought the 64-5.Has some light scratching on finish from emery cloth or something.Would like to polish it and find some original grips.Will Fitz take the scraching out?Square butt revolver, grips are grey not green and have a K stamped inside each grip.Have heard the pre lock older 64s are better guns,saw a new 64 with the lock priced at 559.00 in a gunshop so for 350.00 I think I did ok.

I have been hearing for years that pretty much any S&W revolver in good mechanical condition is worth $350. I tend to agree in most cases.

Nice find on the 64. Flitz will work fine and so will Mother's Mag Polish. Just know when you start removing scratch's the entire revolver will need to be polished. Other wise it will look kinda freaky. As to stocks I would start with Ebay. The gun probably came with checkered magnas. Some after market stocks will also make a polished stainless gun look like a Cadillac. Altamont's come to mind. Lot of choices. Good luck hardcase60

I think you did super OK, indeed. I have a Mod. 13-2; just a 40 yr. older brother to yours, in 357 of course. The 13-2 was a "Perfect Fit" for me when I bought it new and has been my most reliable and accurate companion for lo these many years; including a Factory Tuned Colt Python, a Mod. 66-2 and a Mod. 19-3. Flitz will remove the scratches, if you must. As a "shooter", your new friend will gratify you with target loads and defensive loads as well Enjoy!

It was a good buy, no two ways about it. The Model 10/64 is a fine general-purpose gun. Everybody should own one.

Walk around a few big gun shows and you'll find a plethora of stocks/grips. I prefer Pachmayr Presentations, and used them on my M-64.


I also like the discontinued Uncle Mike's grips.


That was a good price on a good gun, if the scratches aren't too bad.

You guys are right it was a good deal,J&G sales has police trade ins for 499.00 and looks like the hammer is bobbed off!Bought some mothers and used a old wash cloth,that stuff works great!Now I need some original wood stocks.

Ok traded the laminated grey grips for some original target grips from my brother.I think they look good,what do you guys think?

How much time did you spend on the polishing? I traded a 9mm shield for this 64-3 today and it needs polishing bad.

Thanks!I spent maybe an hour,watching tv but the scratches werent deep.Took grips off and cylinder out before polishing,the Mothers paste really worked well,turned the wash cloth black,it would be well worth your time on that 64-3 even if it took longer,just keep going over it till you are satisfied.Thats what I love about stainless pistols,if a blued gun you cant do anything with it,it is what it is.Anyway pre lock smiths are climbing in value and wont get any cheaper,they started putting the lock on them in 2000.You cant go wrong with a pre lock S&W,good trade!

Mine cleaned up pretty good. These grips will have to do until midway gets magnas in stock.

I respectfully disagree with your comments on police trade-ins. They often do exhibit excessive finish wear and dings / dents to the stocks. But usually they are in "carried a lot, shot a little" condition. From time to time, you can find one that must have been a desk drawer queen in like-new condition.


Add to this that police trade-ins were almost certainly maintained by a factory-certified armorer, not by some Bubba with only a set of K-Mart screw drivers.


Thus you usually get one that is excellent to like-new mechanically, if a little challenged in the finish department.

I dont know that much about police use I guess,cosmetically most arent too pretty.I would think the police would practice shooting their pistols on a regular basis.pssman,that looks like it cleaned up real nice!
