Newbie - id help for my dad
Just discovered this forum as my dad has given me a couple of his S&W revolvers. One is a .41 mag that shoots wonderfully.
The other is a .22LR that I really like to shoot also. Sas 22 Long Rifle CTG on the barrel which is a 4". My dad is not sure where he got it or how old it is which I why I am posting.
I found a couple of numbers - on the bottom of the grip frame and cylinder has K 228796.
I was going to take the grips off and check for any numbers as well but the screw didn't want to come out all the way (maybe that's normal) and I wasn't about to pry at the grips and cause any damage (don't trust myself)
On the yoke is 6 8485 (from what I can tell). Above this number is a 1 and below it is a 3.

Looks to me to be a S&W K-22 Masterpiece from about 1954. That's a very nice and desirable .22 there. Thanks for showing it.
The serial is the number preceded by the K.

Looks like a 1954 K22 Combat Masterpiece (pre-model 18). The K number is your serial number.
Beautiful weapon. Don't pry anything.
Search this forum. There are many suggestions on how to remove stubborn grips.
Welcome to the forum.

You have a .22 Combat Masterpiece from 1954. It appears to have its original Magna stocks and is in very nice original condition. That's a wonderful treasure you rec'd from your dad. Be thankful.
It was wise to not pry on the stocks. Good for you.

I had this 28-2 with a set of grips from Hades. I started with floss, then a business card, then with a thin plastic card, then with the very thin blade of a pen knife being careful not to score the metal with the knife blade. It finally loosened enough to lift up with my fingers.

I read somewhere that S&W moved to a 3 screw side plate in 1955 - could this be an early model to that transition?

If the screw won't back out all the way, you might try gently punching it our from the other side. Plastic would be better than steel. Nice K-22!

Your fourth screw is under the right grip panel.

If the grips are really stuck to the frame you can try backing the screw out as far a possible then give it a push to pop the other side of the grip off.
Doing it that way helps keep the grip straight while coming off as not to pop off or damage any wood. Some even say to tap the screw with the back of a screwdriver but usually just pushing will work.
Saw Peak beat me to it. I type very slow. LOL

Thanks for all the info - my dad has been collecting for awhile and has blessed me with these two S&W's, a pre-64 Winchester, custom .243, etc. I feel pretty lucky.

I just noticed "orange" on the front sight ramp. Wonder if that was standard in 1954?

viceunit told you where the other screw is on your revolver. The thing to remember is that the first screw to go was the one on top. If that one is there, the gun has 5 frame screws. In 1956, that one went away. In the early 1960s (within a two year period, depending on the model) the fourth screw in the front of the trigger guard was eliminated, leaving the frames with only three screws.
Also keep in mind that the sequence identified in the paragraph above only works with K and N frames. I and J frames have an entirely different sequence.

I was a little surprised, too, that nobody had mentioned that front sight as not being original to the 1954 Combat Masterpiece; nor was the white outline rear sight. So, OP, just be aware that at some point, the original sights were changed out. It's still a wonderful gun, well set up for whatever you want to do with it. Your dad is a generous guy!

Someone tell me about the "bug" screw at the upper sideplate position. Thanks.
Adios,

It would be interesting to see if there are any indication of a return to the factory on the grip frame. I expect that it did not come originally with a target hammer as well as the sights.

I was thinking about the red and white sights, not usual on a Combat Masterpiece. I have an Outdoorsman in that configuration, red and white sights, service trigger, target hammer; plus target grips. I know it went back for those.

I did take notice of the red ramp but did not know when they were a option to order.
I have looked at a K22 that shipped in 47 with a red post front sight.

I think what you're seeing above the upper side plate screw is the pin that retains the frame-mounted firing pin on K-22s. As far as I know only J and K-frame Airweight models were equipped with the upper side plate locking screw (sometimes referred to as the "bug" screw).

The sights have definitely been replaced. The rear sight doesn't fit right in the notch in the back of the topstrap. Still, wow! Those are some great gifts.

I spoke to my dad. He acquired the gun from a good high school friend and will check to see if he knows when the sights were changed. I don't remember the rear sights as being white - I think that might be a reflection from the flash. I will pull the gun out of the safe again today and try to get some clearer photos.

Not from the flash. It clearly has the white outline rear sight blade. Probably a replacement.
