Default Missing roll mark

I recently bought a model 19-4 Combat Magnum and when I brought it home and started to clean it I realized the "MADE IN USA SPRINGFIELD MASS." Isn't on the side of the frame. All the serial numbers match and it came with the original box with matching numbers. Anyone know if any of these forgot to get stamped or if I have a mystery in my hands?

my 19-3 has it on the right side. I have not personally seen any 19-4 but it does sound strange.

one of the real experts will be along shortly I'm sure

Occasionally the factory screws up. Incorrect model number stamps are not uncommon - a .44 Magnum with an M-57 stamp, for instance. This is the first time I've seen that particular error though. Often owners think they have something "rare" and therefore valuable, but it doesn't make much difference in value one way or the other. It's not like crazy coin collectors who seek out double strikes and other errors.

It looks like a factory error to me. I don't see any sign of a refinish and there's barely a turn line.

Congratulation on picking up a nice gun!

Factory errors happen from time to time.

Could have been the USA die was broken the day your gun was being stamped. The factory wouldn't shut off production because of such a small detail being missing.

Thanks guys, I called Smith and Wesson and they said it must have somehow missed being stamped and slipped past all the inspections before being shipped out, more than likely due to filling a large police order. I bought it at an estate sale and it was kept in his night stand for the past 35 years so it's definitely a one of a kind clean keeper in my book!
