I have been shooting 38sp out of a 6in 686 and reading here and agreeing getting rid of the ring was getting old so saw and read all the posts about the mod 14 and owning a 17-3 and the fun it is to shoot my search began for a mod 14 put a bid on a 14-3 it is 98% and won for what I thought was a very fair price picked it up today in better shape than described it has a k prefex in ser # so I'm quessing late 60s do not know how to post pics but never would have researched the 14 with out your help and posts I hope it is as much fun to shoot as the 17 is thanks

The 38 Masterpiece is a great gun and I find it way more fun to shoot than the K22, especially if you have some steel plates to knock over. I usually bring one of mine to the range with whatever else I take to shoot. It always makes me look good.
I'm pretty sure you're going to love your 14-3.
Beware. When you realize they don't make them like they used to, accumulating more of them can be overwhelmingly tempting.

I like my 15-3 so much, I got a 15-5 to keep it company.
Plus, the 15-5 is essentially a 4" 14.

Ah, yes. A 16. One of many Smiths I wish to acquire that still eludes me.

I have to laugh. It is no wonder people that frequent gun forums have so many guns. I for one am guilty of gotta have one of those.

I originally came here with questions about a really ordinary 686-6 I'd bought. No longer have it, but now have 5 S&W revolvers that are generally considered best in class (if not super rare) and Grail Guns for some folks. Just have to be patient and, well, spend a lot of time on the Internet and in gun stores...

14-3's were made roughly from 1967 to 1976. If it has a K prefix, without any numbers before it, you are correct about the late 60s. The plain K prefix would put it 1967-1970 for a 14-3.

You'll enjoy it. I have a 14-3 and a 14-4 that I bought after growing up shooting my father's 14-3 he bought new in 1971.

No photo's? Definitely agreed

My K38.....attic find last year......still unfired (haven't got up the nerve yet....every time I get ready to take it out...I look at the well used Model 15-3 and take that instead).

Maybe it is the box, or my eyesight, but the barrel looks a foot long! Bob

Sorry bananaman I was on business last week and just saw your question on barrel length of my "attic find" K38 M14-3

Yes........the barrel is original factory at 8-3/8" and the whole gun measures 14-1/2" overall!

She is clearly a "long tom" and that is the main reason I haven't taken her out for a spin at the range. I can't seem to get past the "no-visible turn line", but that aside...I still can't find a "clip-on" bi-pod for bench rest shooting. Some members say shooting these long barrels is really slick and accurate, me? I'll probably end up destroying the wooden ground holders for the target frames at our outdoor range.

@Aventura,

You will love your Model 14, and I am certain that you won't be happy with just one. My first K38 was a Model 14-3 3T that loves my wadcutter loads. This K38 is fired single action, exclusively. I am tempted to install the single action kit that I discovered about 20 years ago.

When I had the opportunity to purchase a 95%+ 4 screw full service K38, I jumped at it. The only thing I changed were the stocks. The service magnas were pulled off and replaced with a Hogue Monogrip. I use this revolver for both PPC matches and as my night stand revolver. This one shoots really well with my 160gr SWC handloads.

If you listen, a K38 can teach you a lot about handgun shooting, and shooting single action!
