29-1 4 inch
sbowenjr's excellent post on 4 inch Model 29 variations in another forum motivated me to show off the one known 29-1 4 inch 44 Magnum. Here is S227230, a 4 inch 29-1 blue 3 screw gun that shipped on May 25th, 1962 to E.K. Tryon in Philadelphia. When I got the gun 12 years ago it came from a town close to Philadelphia so it didn't get too far from home it appears. The 29-1 remains an illusive model variation with the 4 inch being maybe the most illusive of them all. There are 3 known 5 inch barrel guns, 2 nickel 4 screw 4 inch guns and a larger number of 6 1/2 and 8 3/8ths barrel length examples documented. In all though, I don't believe there are more than 30-35 documented. 1962 was a year of transition for the Model 29 and it is not uncommon to find at least 3 different Model 29 variations; 29, 29-1 and 29-2, being shipped during this one year. S227230, besides being the only 4 inch found so far is also the lowest serial number and earliest shipping date for a 29-1 in 1962. But as all S&W collectors know, anything is possible with S&W. Like Bill says, there may be other 4 inch 29-1s out there waiting to be discovered. I hope so because it keeps us die hard collectors of the 29-1 hanging on until the next one in any barrel length comes along.
Enjoy
Chuck

Chuck I had no idea honestly that there was only one documented. You are very fortunate my freind. Congratulations on having one of the rarest of the rare and scarcest of the scarce. I will see this in my sleep for a few nights.

Too Cool!!!
Did you know you had found "the needle in the haystack" when you bought it, or did you find out later? BTW, did you get your above info about the 29-1's from Roy?

boykinlp, yes in part. I always get a factory letter on every S&W I buy, even the ones that I may be pretty certain when and to where a gun may have shipped. The letter of verification is our gold standard for authenticity and on higher priced models/variations Roy's letter is indispensable. However, a factory letter gives only part of the story. In the case of the 29-1, 10-15 years ago, little was known except the fact that so few were turning up. At that time fewer than 20 had been documented. It was at that time that I began to concentrate almost solely on this particular model, hence my forum tag 29-1. At one time I can honestly state, I owned at least half of the 29-1s that had been discovered. It was also during that time that I along with a couple of other collectors on this forum discovered a trend concerning 44 Magnums shipped in 1962 and early 1963. What we discovered was that in the narrow serial number range between S219XXX-S230XXX, Model 29s in all three models, 29, 29-1 and 29-2 were being manufactured and shipped during the approximately 15 month; 1/1962-3/1963 period. We know this because of the factory letters we'd get back on a gun in question. Is some of our conclusions speculation? Yes, but informed speculation based on letter data on a substantial sampling of guns manufactured and shipped during that period. Bet you hate you asked the question now See my commentary on the 29-1 for more detail.
Regards
Chuck

Good question. IMHO, with the -1 the worth is usually what someone is willing to pay that day. A reasonable baseline for a 90%+ example in the 6.5 inch barrel length in the box with tools would be $2000-2500 depending on how bad someone wants it. Understand that this figure can and does go up with condition and when a new collector who doesn't have one in their collection is the buyer. The 8 3/8ths barrel length can fetch up to 5K with all the bells and whistles and in 97%+ condition. The rare barrel lengths in 4 inch and 5 inch definitely will go even higher. The -1 is getting more scarce each year.

29-1
Thank you for the posting on the 29-1. The information was very helpful. I am starting to put together a small collection of Smiths and was lucky enough to have obtained a nice 8 3/8 and a 6 1/2. I just joined the forum and look forward to participating.
Best regards to all

Scott S thanks. The -1s as you have come to learn I suspect not the easiest of the 29s to collect. For me though they have been the most fun to pursue. Welcome to the forum. Where in my home state are you exactly? I was born in Graham and grew up in Wichita Falls.

S220004, one of the two known Model 29-1s with a 4-screw frame and an extractor rod with an improved, left-hand thread. This 29-1 and the other one are the only two known which are correctly configured as a -1 model variation. All of the other known 29-1s have a 3-screw frame and an extractor rod with an old style, right-hand thread. There are two known Model 29s configured correctly as a -1 model variation, but are stamped MOD-29 in the yoke cut. As Chuck stated, collecting this variation of the Model 29 is challenging and fun.

I had a partner that carried one just like yours. It was a thing of beauty and, in 1972, it cost him $ 500.00. Considering we took home less than that each month, it was a serious investment. We got into a switch with some highjackers one night and the muzzle blast from that 29 completely eliminated his night vision, and on top of that, he missed. I was carrying a S&W 19 and it solved the problem. The 29 was retired and between the muzzle blast and recoil, I don't believe he ever carried it again. I tried buy it from him citing his poor accuracy and he got upset at me !! We remained friends and continued to patrol together for another year.

They are both 29-1 The 6 1/2 is in the S229xxx range and the 8 3/8 is in the high S228xxx range. Both are in what I would consider high 90s condition with wood boxes tool are lettered. Soon as I figure out how to do pictures on this thing I will do so.
