19-4 NIB W/Box Question
Friday the 13th I traded into this unfired in the box Model 19-4 made in 1980. I traded a excellent 629-3 and $50 to get it. It has a red ramp, white outline a replacement target trigger, a standard hammer and the original trigger was also in the box. It is pinned and recessed. No rubs, scratches or blemishes anywhere.
The dealer said the original owner bought it new and that this was the original box but that it had come with a presentation case which he did not sell. Does that sound like a reasonable explanation for why the box has no S&W Logo or end labels?

Bottom line, as long as you are happy with the deal, who cares what anyone else thinks! As far as the labels, they probable dried up and fell off years ago. Although it would be desirable to have the box with labels, oh well, you already made the deal and I would not lose any sleep over it.
Congratulations on your deal and I'm sure you will enjoy it with or without the end labels. HI HI

That doesn't look like a S&W box from 1980 unless it's upside down, but the gun all the other stuff looks really good. I would have probably made the same trade. It's a close one. I don't why you had to throw in fifty bucks. An original box should be easy to find on EBAY. I don't remember these guns coming in presentation cases. They were mostly reserved for the N Frames. Who knows, maybe it did.

The paper and the tools look legit, but my boxes from that time were the blue and white boxes and they have that little plastic cone that goes into the trigger guard, like DocB said unless it's upside down I don't think it's a 1980's box. As far as the trade goes,I would be happy with the deal even with no box.

I bought my 19-4 4 inch new around 1980. It has a two piece box with the metal clips on the edges. It has labels on both ends of the top half. The box is blue with a grayish colored trim and S & W emblem in the upper left hand corner. The lower right hand corner has some more Smith and Wesson script. Don't know if this helps.

I can't see the metal corners, but let's assume they are there. If the gun shipped with a presentation case (it is possible) the gun would have been packed in a blue, two piece box, that would very likely have lacked the paper end label. So this could be an original box, even though it doesn't have the silver printing on top (which would have included the Bangor Punta name).
1980 is definitely not too late for a two piece blue box. I have a Model 14-4 that letters to July, 1980. It came in the two piece Bangor Punta box. I know because I bought it brand new and I still have it along with all the pieces that came with it. It is still ANIB.

The box does have the same metal reinforced corners as all my other boxes from the period, there just is no art work on the lid. I have read that most presentation boxes were for the "N" frames but in the 80's there were more options.
No complaints on the "deal" I had very little in the 629 and it was a duplicate for me. I see 629's all the time but seldom ever see a 19 in my area of Montana and this one is real nice.
Thanks for the replies.

I have a 19-4 6" my first revolver and I wouldn't trade it for the world.

That's a gorgeous gun.
I have a 19 4" that was my original duty gun from 1987. I bought used from a local dealer.....gotta hunt around to see if I even have the box still?????????????? Might even have the serial checked one day through S&W.
Mine came with a large spur hammer, smooth faced trigger, Herritt wooden grips and was "told" a factory trigger job. The grips are long since gone, not even sure what I did with them as I replaced them with Pachmeyers while in the academy.
I'd never give up my 19, lots of history!

I have a 25-5 that I bought new in late 1979. It came with the wood presentation box and all the tools. The actual box that the revolver was in was a blue, two piece, with no markings or label, much like the one you have. I have to say that I have never seen a M19 in a presentation case, but if it did indeed come with one, then your blue box looks right to me.

Most 6" M19s came with a Patridge front sight. I prefer the red ramp myself.
The Texas Ranger M19 came in a presentation case. Not familar with any others.

Never saw a K frame in a presentation case except for the commerative models. Never saw a 6" 19 with a red ramp either. Maybe a letter is in order on this one. Also unusual to ship with a target hammer but not trigger, or was it the other way around?

The Target Hammer was a popular option, even on very early Combat Magnums (Pre-19s) and often seen without the Target Trigger on early examples.

Congrats on a great revolver, she's gorgeous!
Of the three Md. 19's I have, none came with their boxes, but it sounds like a few others have helped you with that issue.

A very few Combat Magnums were shipped with presentation cases over the years and would account for the box you have.

Congratulations on getting a really nice model 19. They are great Revolvers, and you have worked into a very, very nice one.
Even though it is NIB I do hope that at a minimum you put some 38 specials through it and see how accurate it is with that 6" barrel.
