newbie with a mint .38 10-5 needs help
Hello everyone, just joined and acquired a .38 special model 10-5. Serial number is C722803. I would rate this gun a strong 95-98%
Less than 25 rounds and then cleaned and put away in a correct case. There is not a mark on it. zero scratches on the chamber and the small inclusion on the right grip turned out to be a bit of wax. I'd like to know what year this was as I read that 10-5 had numbers starting with the letter "D." Secondly what is a fair market value for this as I may end up selling it. BTW, there is no box or other paper work as it was a gift many years ago to a friend from his dad.

Welcome to the forum.... I have a 10-5 with a D908xxx serial number, which I believe is a 1975 or 76 production date. I believe the 10-5 production began in 1962. Not the entire answer you were looking for but I hope it helps a little.

Looks very much like the one condition wise I just gifted my son yours is about 100,000 newer so thinking about 1965. I gave $300 for mine in 2015 granted it was a good deal. I would think around $350-400 depending on location. YMMV

Welcome also! C772000 would likely be a late 1964 production gun, which fits with the wood stocks on it (the uncheckered diamond around the stock screw). It would probably bring $450-500 to a private buyer, much less in a trade in or sale to a dealer (not a criticism, just economic reality with expenses and profit margins).
BTW, D908000 would be from about 1976 . Hope this is helpful.

Should bring $400 pretty easy. Bear in mind that a new Smith Classics M10 is MSRP around $750, and nobody really wants one of those. Your gun should actually be worth more than that since it is a much better and obviously older gun, but, somehow, it's not. I'd put it at $400-$500. I didn't even notice those nice diamond grips. They bring $100-$150 and are a bit hard to find.

Thanks! I have the original receipt for $135; it was purchased in 4/76 so I wasn't sure if it was a late 75 or early 76 production.

As Alan said, this one dates to c. 1964. The Model 10-5 was made from 1962 until the end of 1976. D prefixes started in 1968.
The stocks appear to be original. Not only do they have the diamond that Alan mentioned, they also have the rounded butt edges, which was standard for the Model 10. The diamond disappeared in 1968, but the rounded bottom shape continued, as shown on this Model 10-5 from 1968:

That's a VERY nice piece.....
If you keep it for any length of time, the value is bound to change, maybe drastically.

I have that exact same gun and it is by far my favorite for gun games. They are meant to be shot. Around here that would easily be a $500+ gun.

In the DFW area if this gun was listed for $450 on the local sites it would sell within the first day.

Welcome to the FORUM! It is a nice 10-5 example. I would expect to be $450 -ish due to clean & stocks on it. Myself, I prefer the heavy barrel models. Bob

I must be living in the wrong state.Around these parts a badly worn finish model 10 would be $450-$500 all day.And it would sell because that's about the only Smiths you can find on dealers shelves lately.
