Range Report - S&W Model 13-2 Nickel 4"
I found this Model 13 at my LGS. The nickel has issues (mostly pitting) on both the frame and cylinder. The side plate screws had been replaced with blued screws. I discovered that the yoke retention screw was not tight, for a reason. When I tightened the screw the cylinder wouldn't open as the screw was to long. I flat filed it until it was the proper length.
The gun was also filthy from a lack of proper firearm maintenance. This was once a fine Model 13-2, I did what I could to bring it back.
I'm trying to find the correct nickel screws. As an interim I removed the blue from the existing screws, polished and waxed them until I find the correct ones. Added **lock up and timing are fine.
Here are a few photos showing the bad areas and then the glamor shot

Pretty bad but I've seen worse. You can get the screws at gun_garage on EBAY. Amazing how people treat their guns and other property. We have the same problem here in Georgia.

Kudos for your willingness to tackle this project and save it from it's poor state. I applaud you, Sir.
BTW, it looks MUCH better!

Pics 3 and 4 have a pattern similar to some Colt grips.
Nice job!

Thank you. I actually ordered a very nice nickel cylinder off ebay but unfortunately the original yoke would not seat into the cylinder recess properly and in addition the stars were not interchangeable.
I thought for sure it would be a straight change out but it wasn't so the old cylinder will stay as is.

Nice job of saving one, opaul ! The Model 13 makes for a very nice K-frame revolver. I agree with you ralph7 about the similarity of the pictured grips to Colt Detective Special (post1972) grips! Not quite the same but, close !

I really like the Sile grips. I just got them from a forum member who has some up for sale in the classifieds.
They don't look as nice as the Smith targets but for my size hands they fit and handle very well.

Ugly Duckling Model 13-2 Range Report
I'll be the first to admit that I'm no marksman. But it's obvious the blemished model 13 will hold her own if you treat her right.
Twelve shots 6@10 yards and 6@15 yards off hand double action.
I'm liking these Sile grips too!
