Default Another 10-6 357 question

Hi new to the forum. Have probably read every thread on this forum and others about the model 10-6 and would like to know was original owner such as police not necessary an individual.

I have got a factory letter on my 10-6, 357, s/N D486320. The letter gave the dist name and address as Richard Shelburne, Inc, Amhurst, MA and date of 11-20-1972.

I was hoping for more useful information like who was likely the end user such as the NYSP.
Can anyone shed any light on this distributor and their likely customers.

Gun is in very good condition with a little holster wear on the barrel end. It appears not to have been shot very much. I have had the gun for around thirty years. Sorry no pictures.

I have not yet lettered my .357 10-6. Now you have me energized to do so! Sorry I can't help with the distributor, but someone here who can will probably be along soon.

The gun was still marked as 10-6 in .357. They hadn't yet marked them as M-13. I do suspect a police order, and NYSP is a good bet. Who else issued .357 M-10-6's??

I think OK used the stainless version.

If NYSP marked their guns and this is obviously unmarked, could be an overrun order sold commercially.

I pretty much consider it a waste of $75, I already could guess by the serial # it was manufactured in early year. I have searched a lot for the distributor on the inter net and have found nothing.

I've never lettered mine (D706428) either - probably never will. It is a well-used gun that I bought because of its novelty. We need a couple of photos in this thread, so here you go...

And here it is with an equally odd 357 Model 64-1 (D673061)

...and a photo of the "357 side" of the 64-1:

Mine is also lettered to the same distributor. At that time, he was a prime shipper to the NYSP. I could never get replies from him indicating to whom he delivered my 10-6 (both snail mail and email). Neither the NYSP 10-6 or the NYSP 13-1 guns were agency marked. The 10-6 was the first Smith to be issued to uniformed Troopers after a long run of Colt revolvers (1917-1972). Getting assistance from the agency for that info, that far back, is a cluster.

Those are not what I would call "Well used". More like high condition shooters.

How did you find out they were a prime shipper to NYSP? If the letter had just stated that it would have been a big help. When I sent an email asking more I never got to Mr Jinks and Mrs Creely answered that no more info was available. I remember reading on this forum that someone got a letter stating that his distributor was a prime distributor for NYSP and that was all I was hoping for.

Welcome to the forum. I don't mean to sound rude, but, how can you guess when your revolver was manufactured? It there some secret your not tell us?
The serial number won't tell you when it was manufactured, just when it shipped and to whom.

One of the easiest things in the world to do is to guess. Anyone can do it.

My letter regarding my 10-6 from Mr. Jinks includes the following quote: "Mr. Sherburne's company was the supplier to the New York State Police, but the invoice does not show it as a contract revolver for the State Police. However, this is not uncommon not to list it as police issue."

Hope this helps.

Can anyone tell me the highest known serial number for one of these 10-6 357 revolvers?

I have one that was overstamped 13-1 that has serial number D770552.

Since D706428 is still stamped as 10-6, that would seem to indicate that it would have to be one of the first 65,000 13-1's built.

I think it would be interesting to see how close it can be narrowed down to the start of S&W stamping them all with the 13-1 model number...

Sure it does. Narrows it down from 64000 to 63000.
It would really be cool if it were D770325 instead of D707325, but every little bit helps.
Thanks
