Default $850 for a 1978 Model 19-4...thumbs up or thumbs down?

I deal with this LGS on a regular basis and his prices are usually very fair, but 850 dollars seems a bit steep. Thought I'd ask you guys what you think. Gun is in excellent condition.

I've never owned a vintage Smith but I've really been lusting after this gun.

Seems a bit high to me. Might want to check completed auctions on GB for a guide.

Since you've dealt with this particular LGS in the past do you pay the asking price or have you been able to negotiate successfully with them?

That's what I figured. What would you guys offer for it?
I see these listed on GB for as little as 5 or 6 hundred. Does inclusion of the original grips and box have a big influence on the price?

I've never bought a used gun from him but his new gun prices are often below internet prices, so I've always paid the list price. That's why his price on this 19 threw me for a loop.

6" 19-4 in that condition - that's about a $600 gun in my neck of the woods.

High for W. Pa. by about $100 maybe as much as $200.....Haven't seen one in good while in a LGS.......

Markets vary ....... places like Calf. and Conn. with "import"/gun restrictions can see silly stupid prices.

Just looked at the link...... 6 inch gun ..... they bring the lowest prices .... vs 2 1/2 and 4 inch guns..

So around here he's IMO at least $200-250 high

For $850 you can find a real nice model 19.

That price is high, I would keep looking if you really want a model 19.

That one is like a $550 gun.

Nothing wrodng with it, except that it is just priced wrong.

$850 is way high in my book, even if it were a slightly more desireable 4". He has it priced as though it were nickel and 2.5" bbl.

$600 give or take is more in line in my area.

For me, it's priced way too high.

For me it would be $500 to $550 maximum.

But I I'm not a real fan of 6" handguns, so keep that in mind.

I picked up a 19-3, 6", target hammer, target trigger, with a very, very nice and crisp trigger action. The gun is 90%. I'm $530.00 into it. You can see pictures here.

Thumbs down. Would have to be a pristine -2 or earlier with box and accessories for me to even think about it. And I would probably say no even then.

Well, in my opinion, I will say it is high. But everything is high nowadays. I can't believe the prices.... I thought that we would get some easing of prices with the election of the candidate that won. That doesn't seem to be the case. In fact it seems that prices have inched up.....
I recently bought a 19-4 6" blue with nothing with it. It is in exceptional condition BUT, I paid $900 for it. Yep. That's right. 9. But, it is in great condition and will be a fine acquisition. I overpaid but the price was firm and I wanted the gun since I haven't found something comparable for a few years. I saw one in the local Cabela's but it was almost as much and its condition wasn't close as it is with mine. So, being as I had been looking for one for several years and have come to shy away from Gunbroker because I have gotten burned a couple of times, I paid the price and got an exceptional 19-4 (it was important for me to get the model with the gas plug on the cylinder). So, yeah it is high and you could find another at a lower price somewhere, someday. Glad I am not in that position again. Best of luck in your quest for a fine 357 revolver.

SCSW4 values them at $700 for ANIB; no premium adders for early models (19-0, 1 or 2), or more popular bbl.'s (2/1-2" or even 4"). -S2

I would also say that price is too high. No way I would go more than $550/$575. I recently picked up a really nice 4" 66 no dash for $615. Saw a nice 19-3 6" in a shop for $575, it took a while to sell. Doesn't seem to be as much demand for 6" 19's. To be honest I prefer the 2.5" and 4" myself.

I just picked up a 19-4 2" in excellent condition, no box or papers. I had to jump on it at 570$. I think your LGS is to high. This must have been a night stand gun shot very little. There is no wearing of the blue and just the faintest turn line. Good luck in your search, you can find one for less.

Nice gun, but looks too high $ to me. For the price he's asking, he needs higher quality photos for people to be able to determine real condition. It looks like very good condition, but not excellent/mint, standard gun (magnas, no TT/TH, and no box/docs).

With no box/docs, in VG condition, I'd say that's maybe around a $550 gun in my neighborhood. LNIB, $600 - $700. I bought a 6" 19-4 a couple of years ago for $595. Mint/LNIB condition, I thought it was a decent deal. Came from the estate of a gentleman that kept buying brand new Smiths, back in the day, and just stuck them in his vault; never touched them. What an awesome collection of perfect condition S&Ws. I would have spent another $100/150 for the same gun just to be able to have the un-molested condition. Very hard to find examples like that, especially locally...

I like the 19s in all barrel sizes, the 6" look real nice to me, and they are excellent shooters, if you're going to use it! The 2 1/2" 19s are harder to find these days, and usually bring a little more money. Some people ask stupid money for the snubbies, but I just don't see the value/scarcity in most cases. This all said, I passed on a very nice (LNIB) 2 1/2" 19-5 last year that was priced at $600, but the dealer offered it to me for $550. Rare occasion where I felt that I just didn't need it... Probably would have snagged it if it was a -4.

Hope this gives you some more perspective on dialing in on your first classic Smith. Good luck, and let us know when you land one!

Way too high. Last Saturday I picked up a nice shooter 19-4 in the box for 600 otd. I felt like I payed $50 too much, but it was 3t's and I'm a sucker for those damn two piece boxes...

I would keep looking! You may find 1 when you least expect it and at a better price. My 6" 19, is a 14-3. (a joke) Bob

If it was a 2 1/2" barrel it would be the going price or higher, pretty high for a 4", and very high for a 6". Good luck.

I am one of the few who really like the 6" Model 19s. I have a blue and a nickel...both in high condition. I got them about 10 years ago on this forum for under $400. for each.

You can do better if you want to spend time on your computer.
