Default Getting Rid of Spots on 27-3

Can someone recommend the best way to clean up these spots?

This is a new to me 27-3. It has a few spots like this on the frame and the cylinder. Right now I have cleaned the gun and then put Renaissance wax on it. What can I do to remove these spots w/o taking off the bluing?

Thanks!

That looks like metal pitting to me. So there is no way to remove them without buffing the area down to metal, unfortunately. If you want the pitting removed, it's off to someone for a refinish job. Or just look at it as character and shoot the snot out of that revolver.

Default 27 spots

Gets some flits or mothers mag wheel cleaner, pot a small amount on a cotton rag and buff the gun, and buff lightly, this will remove the surface grit and grime and surface rust. keep using a clean spot on the rag, buffing to much and to hard will remove the blue, be slow and easy, no power tools. after buffing wipe with a clean rag it will be slick. after cleaning with the flits or mothers apply REN wax several coats.

Nothing to do. That's light pitting and anything you do to remove it will remove finish.

Remove the rust as mentioned. Then you can touch up the bluing with a Presto blue pen.I see this done on many high end classics on GB.I once did a model 19-1 using this method and it came out pretty decent.

I would NOT recommend that you use steel wool. I do recommend using fine bronze wool available at Home Depot.

I'd practice on an less valuable piece before going after your 27 with abrasives and cover ups but does help once you're used to knowing how. If you don't go the refinish route condition it's like classic cars, there's show level cars, and there are driver level cars. This is to say you now have more of a upper level shooter than a presentation gun. It still an excellent valuable gun a couple of pits or not. These finish factors are why stainless is so popular.

As stated above by Pisgah and others, that is without question, pitted metal. There is no way to "to remove these spots w/o taking off the bluing". You may be able to achieve limited success in minimizing the appearance but complete removal would likely require polishing and rebluing.

It happens, laws of nature and sometimes in cases where the utmost care has been taken in trying to prevent it.
Some would say it adds character, others live with it,some fix it. I guess the choice depends on what the gun's role means to you. Personal satisfaction versus financial commitment.

You have a fine and desired firearm and from what you and the photo describe, it is completely functional otherwise,..so.. if those spots correlated to a price reduction then you are in a good place.

Lightly Flitz, Ren Wax, Shoot! And then be happy and proud that you own one of the finest and most beautiful revolvers ever made.

I personally agree with this advice right here.

We all love perfect safe queen type guns, but I also think many of us also have an appreciation for a gun that is still beautiful, but has some scars and patina to it. Honest wear is a good thing.

So a little light polishing and waxing and enjoy shooting it!

I would never leave active rust on a gun. My solution is to soak the area in Kroil for a few hours. Then, with the Kroil still on the metal, take an older copper penny as someone mentioned above and lightly scrape the rust flakes off. Yes, it will leave a spot where the rust was, but it's better than leaving the rust there to continue to eat its way down into the metal. You can't get oil or wax under the rust. Then use 0000 bronze or copper wool and "lightly rub the spot, staying off the edge. Then wipe off the Kroil, touch it up with a little Oxpho blue and wax it up.

All the perfumes of Araby will not erase these spots...

Or whatever Lady MacBeth actually said. Going from memory.

You could have the gun engraved and the offending spots removed that way.

An interesting idea. Maybe engraved with "Out Damn Spot!"
