Default Hi new here and looking for some help.

Hey there everyone! I'm sure there are dozens if not hundreds of threads just like this, but i'm new on here and am looking for some help in tracking down how old my revolver is. I won it at auction on gunbroker, the dealer told my it was an old police trade in. I know its a Model 10, 3 screw, pinned barrel.

The 10-6 was first issued in the early 60's ; that will get you in the ballpark. Someone will nail the mfg. date by way of the serial number real soon.

Sure does look like a police trade in. Get some FLITZ and spend good time on the workbench smoothing out that finish. There is a good looking revolver in there.

It looks like it should be late in the year 1967.

Production hit C-million around early/mid 1968 and then started with the D-prefix, so the late-1967 estimate, possibly early 1968, is very likely correct. Only a history letter could tell you the exact ship date, and (maybe) which agency it went to, unless it was sold through a distributor.

I notice that your location says Long Island. If you had bought it locally, or if the GB seller is from your area, it's highly likely NYPD. They were buying the Model 10-6 in bulk in those years. I have a low D-prefix, D 47xxx from June 1968, lettered to the NYPD Equipment Bureau, bought through GB from a gunshop on Staten Island.

I'm actually NYPD myself, that's why I bought it. Funny thing is my dad was too. when I brought this for my 2 years on the job annaversery, I brought it home and showed him, he said said" I could have just given you mine". But the seller said I think it's from Maine or Vermont.

That's a fine old revolver and most likely a great shooter.
I have one in almost the same condition that has been my nightstand gun for many years. You just can't beat an old Model 10!

Thank you for your (and your father's) service, a difficult and dangerous job.

The good news is you can treat yourself to another ex-NYPD sidearm at every anniversary! You can start with an NY-1 stamped model 64, then a model 60, an older tapered barrel model 10, then all the way back to a Colt New Police .32 as mandated by Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt...

Enjoy!

Thanks for the information everyone, and yes it's a fantastic shooter, I'm better with it at 25 yards than my Glock 26 with the 12 lb trigger pull that's mandated by my job. I'm thinking of sending it back to the factory for reblueing. I have a full set of the old NYPD holster and 2 speed loaders with pouch.
