Wow! Are those gouges in the metal on the left side by the rear of the trigger guard and near the end of the barrel? That's.........distressing for me to look at. Would make for a very interesting project.

Nice work Charles rescuing that one!! She will be blowing smoke once again I have no doubt!

Keep us posted.......

A few years back I purchased a Winchester .30-30 from a guy when I was up in Seattle that had the same corrosion as your revolver......I soaked it in KROIL for a few days and took it apart, scrubbed it down and even though the outside is completely and deeply pitted, the insides and the bore are shiny and the gun shoots great! It's now my "Throw it in the truck" gun when I head out to the woods.

It was part of a large lot of police trade ins from Mobile Alabama PD. It could be a seizure or a retired duty gun. The dealer didn't know. I bought it online from a store in Kansas.

Best,
Charles

Did somebody actually CHEW on the barrel?? That opens up some disturbing scenarios ....

And how much did the "blanket and hot tea" cost you to stop that poor thing from "shivering in the cold"?

At the very least, you make me feel good about the 15-3 that I picked up a while back that is covered with scratches and rubs but I am finding myself more and more drawn to these orphans than the beauty queens sitting next to them. Well Done!

Default M15-3 DAMAGE

It looks as it may have been thrown out of a car, hit the pavement and ended up in a ditch for awhile. Just a thought.

Its interesting that the stocks appear relatively OK when compared to the gun. They look like they could easily be brought back to like with some effort. I'd like the find a 2 inch 15 n similar condition with a 2 inch barrel for either a truck gun or a camp gun or both. My 15 is just too darn nice to knock around or carry so its in service as home defense.

That'd be my educated guess also. I can imagine a scenarios or two in which this could happen. Afterward, it wouldn't get wiped off at least until Crime Scene was finished with it. Absalom may have the correct idea.

Best,
Charles

I "get it" that some view these "tools" as "tools," but, dang man, I take better care of the hammer I rescued from the side of the road.

Good for you, Charles, for giving that one a proper home.

You are a better man than I...... I don't think that I could be that altruistic. It is just too far gone for me to spend anything on.... I would have to just find something better. But YOU are the man for saves!!!

OMG, how much did they pay you to get that poor thing out of the sellers inventory? LOL. No offense to you but that one makes some of my orphans look like safe queens. A tip of my hat to you and I can't wait to see what you do with her. Please tell me the stocks number to the gun? Best regards, hardcase60

What a shame, it's got the wrong stocks on it! Too bad, otherwise a nice late 1975 vintage gun.

THE GUN PARTS MAY BE WORTH MORE THAN YOU PAID FOR THE GUN....lol. CLEANED UP, THAT WILL BE A NICE KNOCK AROUND PIECE FOR PROTECTION, IN A TACKLE BOX, OR A TRUCK GLOVE BOX. GREAT FIND.......

Default Another "rescue" called my name......

This gun looks like it has had the Richard Rawlings 'Fast N' Loud' treatment. A great talking piece. Reminds me of a phrase my mum used to say about people "it's not what they look like on the outside that matters, but what they are like on the inside that counts." I'd leave her just the way as she is now she's a star on this forum!

The stocks are from a later K frame than a pinned barrel model 15, which would be consistent with the originals being replaced with whatever else damaged the metal finish so badly.

This one would appear to be one on which to practice one's metal refinishing skills. I've seem some fairly miraculous examples of pitted/rusted/otherwise externally nasty revolvers here brought back to respectable condition.

I bid once on that gun myself but I didn't go very high.
When I first saw it I was kind of thinking that some Flitz might fix it up. Well, maybe not.

I agree that the stocks are replaced. Correct me if I'm wrong. But, the PC stocks were not standard on the 4" Combat Masterpiece. They were on the 2" guns though. IIRC, the 4" had either square butt service stocks or full sized targets.

The hammer price on the auction was $221. I'll post a link to the closed auction later that has several more pics. I've actually paid less in the past for CMs in better condition. But, I really wanted to save this old girl!!

If function is OK, I am going to shoot it "as is"!!!

Here is the link to the closed auction:

Charles,

After having looked at the auction pics my take on the cause of the finish deterioration is also very likely blood. Regardless, IMHO for the price you done good. hardcase60

my hypothesis is that somebody bled all over it, then ditched it . Looks to me like it skidded down a road after being tossed out of a car.

Yeah, I think Absalom is on the right track also. I get the feeling both you and I have seen these scenarios before.

I've seen a few revolvers and autos that looked like that. A 'smith pal bead blasted and reblued them.
They were always snapped up ASAP by eager buyers.

The grips look better than the ones on a mistreated 15-2 that I adopted last year.

I must say, I think you found the perfect ugly grip to go on that ugly revolver. They were meant to be together. I get the feeling that it will shoot a heck of a lot better than it looks.

The left side is worse than the right. I'm stickin' with my hypothesis that it's a blood gun tossed out of a moving car window.

That's really rough looking and I want to see what you do with it. Do you plan on giving it a face make over?

Can I ask what's the exact meaning of a 'blood gun' then? I've got a basic idea, but because I've never heard the expression used here in Blighty, I might be reading more into it!

My, my. That gun has had a hard life. She looks like the Wrath. How far she has come to look that rough.

BrainFlood; a "blood Gun" is a gun that had substantial amounts of blood spilt upon it. Blood eats the finish off of a blued gun, leaving a dark, mottled finish.

That one might be a candidate for one of those new bake on finishes. Good job on that "save". You're going to wind up with a nice shooter out of that.
