Model 10 Heavy Barrel Info??
I saw a Model 10 no dash, Heavy Barrel at a LGS, serial # C452XXX on the butt, and was wondering if it was right and the date of shipping from S&W?
I thought that the Model 10's were dash models with butt serial numbers?

The "C" prefix would correspond to a 1960's era production, probably around 1965.

The information I can find doesn't have the heavy barrel introduced until the 10-1 in 1959.

C452xxx would seem to be 1960 production, which does fit with the no dash Model 10. However, the heavy barrel is suspicious. The heavy barrel showed up in 1959 with the advent of the -1, but anything is possible with S&W. They certainly could have fitted a heavy barrel to a Model 10 in 1960. Can you show us some pictures?

And keep in mind that the Model 10 without the dash number would have right hand threads on the extractor rod. That should be evident by looking at the knurled end.

I have Model 10, no dash, bearing serial number C 477768. It letters as having shipped December 29, 1959. Obviously, C 452XXX would have been produced (or at the least, serial numbered) prior to my revolver. The heavy barrel does seem problematic without it being marked as a Mod. 10-1.

Hi - I'm new to the forum. I too have a Model 10, no dash, heavy barrel, serial no. C 4531XX. It seems as though S&W made some no dash heavy barrels before the 10-1 came out. Thoughts?

I have a 10-1 heavy barrel that is actually marked as a 101 (the dash is missing). S&W may have been a little careless with their markings back then.

The frame contour near the barrel of a tapered vs. bull barrel model 10 is very different; a replacement of one of the latter on a model 10 (-2, 4, 5, 7, 9) would be obvious. Another clue of a later bull barrel replacement is a model 10-1 would have a 1/10" front sight width, and a later one would be 1/8". One of these in the SN ranges mentioned above on which the barrel "fits" and has the thin front blade probably just missed being stamped properly at the factory.
