If you look up Jovino Effector you will get some information on one of the potential people. Another picture of the other side with the cylinder swung out may help you also.

Most modified guns go for less than an unmolested one would unless it was done by a known pistolsmith. That one looks nice.

Your gun appears to be one which was modified by John Jovino. The contour of the barrel lug is one of the identifying marks. In addition to the short barrel you will note that the grip is rounded and you will also find that there is a ball detent in the bottom of the ejector shroud and detent in the front of the cylinder yoke. The shape of the hammer spur is also distinctive.
Jovino's shop was in New York across from the police station and he provided many arms for the NYPD. Jovino and several other gunsmiths such as Austin Behlert were some of the first to shorten the large bore modern S&W's and their guns are highly collectable. If your concealed carry tastes run to large bore
revolvers you will be hard pressed to improve on that one.
A search of the forum will provide you with several links that you may find interesting.

THANKS!
Thanks so much for the info. Only 2nd time to use the Forum and I really appreciate the expert advice and vast experience. Maybe I can contribute one day! Here are some additional pix. Lighting does not show the rich black overall color of the gun.

Bill,
That also appears to be a "Jovino". It is somewhat unique in that it is nickel. The vast majority of his conversions were blue. I only know of two other nickel ones...I have one and an advanced collector on the west coast has another.

Jovino???
I thought Jovino always installed a ball detent crane lock, or am I missing something?

Yes, the ball detent is necessary since the factory locking point at the muzzle end of the ejector rod was removed and the hole was plugged when the barrel was shortened.
The ball is just visible on the first picture with the open cylinder.

You are contributing.....Even the most experienced here still learn new things.
Your post I'm sure has shown a few others about Jovino.
Thanks a lot...Get that sucker......At worst for me.

There is a ball detent installed in the the lower portion of the shroud contacting the yoke but there is no detent at the end of the ejector rod in the shroud. Terry

The dimple for the ball to fit into is on the front face of the crane.

The OP's looks like a Jovino. I have 25-2 Jovino Conversion with matching box.
The nickel 25-5 is of the same style...but it looks like one I used to own a few years ago that I sold as a converted gun. A few dealers passed it around as a Jovino, but it is 100% not a Behlert or Jovino. Hope it's not that one, although still a great gun.

Bill,
The two pictures of the nickel gun which you posted obviously have some characteristics of the Jovino modified guns so it would be very helpful to us if you can describe the points which convince you that it isn't.
Of course, if you know the maker that would certainly be the defining statement and it isn't necessary to identify him. Whoever did the work was a true craftsman.
Thanks for adding all that you can to the knowledge of these pieces.

That's a great looking gun!
Here's my 25-5, came with the box and left the factory with a 6" barrel and 3T's. Hammer has been ground down and the trigger is smoothed and polished along with the yoke ball detent. It looks a lot like TCK318's and the others posted.
Always wondered what the defining characteristics of an authentic Javino are. One of these days I'll get a letter and see where it was shipped to.

Knowing that heavy .45 ACP projectiles are more difficult to accelerate, I'd be curious to see some chronograph results for a 2.5" .45 ACP.
These Jovino models are certainly interesting and collectible but I personally would not go under 4" in .45 ACP.

If that is not a Jovino, it is doing a good imitation of one!
The John Jovino gun shop still exists in New York City, and I think it is still owned by the Imperato family. They or one of them, Anthony Imperato, owns Henry Repeating Arms.

I would like to see what they are moving as well.
From what I've seen out of a 3" and 3.5" 1911 platform they lost about 50-70 fps from each inch in barrel length.

You are all correct on my 25-2! Got my Factory Letter back today and it was shipped to John Jovino on Dec 29, 1983 in a lot of 650 units. Shipped as a .45 ACP Target Model of 1955 Model 25-2. with 6 inch barrel, white out line rear sight and combat stocks. They said these guns were probably cut down to the 2.5 inch barrel length by the Jovino Company to sell as a special item. Definitely good news, and to confirm the story about the 650 unit lot of guns!

Seems a bit odd to me it shipped with combat grips.
Someone stop by and see if there are 650 sets of those down there for me.

I have a 4 inch 25-5 that shipped to Jovino, but it was not modified. Most likely just got sold the way it came in.
