Default 28-2 followed me home

Just bought a 28-2, box and docs, no tools. 6 bbl. Diamond magnas numbered to gun. Barely fired, had to look closely. Ended up at $700 otd. Did I do Ok, or buy it to early? Thanks, Ken

Using pre-election prices you did good, but it was not a screaming bargain. Now, nobody knows how low gun prices will settle. Since I do not buy guns to resell I'm more concerned with how much I like a specific revolver's action than its price. Model 28s are great .357s.

You didn't steal it based on your description but that's about the going price around here. You certainly did ok.

Price seems fine to me. My LGS had a 28-2, some nicks and a chipped grip. No box or doc or tools for $700. The only one in the area.

We need a pix!

We are experiencing a rerun of the 1994 election's effect on gun buying, more or less. If you hadn't had guns as a hobby long enough to remember the 1990s then the collapse of S&W Holding Corporation (SWHC) and Ruger (RGR) stock prices in the days following the 2016 election should have been a good clue. By 11-11-16 RGR was 39% below its 52 week high and SWHC was down 32%. The only surprising thing was that historically steady growing RGR was down more than extremely volatile SWHC.

On the good side we may soon be able to trade one rusty Model 10 for three high end AR-15s. (slight exaggeration)

Here's my advice, shoot it and then get back with us. If you can even remember what question you had about the HP.

98% all matching 6" with everything except tools for $700 is a reasonable deal. You need to post pictures of it and of the serial number in this thread
The ultimate Highway Patrolman thread.including N frame ser# ranges

I haven't noticed much softening of S&W prices since the election, perhaps due to the scarcity of collectible S&Ws. I haven't seen any N frame with box/papers in nice shape for less than $700 in several years. A few months ago I traded for a 28-2 as you describe (with unused tools) which was priced at $750. Not sure of short term direction of prices but wish a few more S&Ws that I'm interested in would show up for sale. Enjoy.

I guess it varies by area. I just recently purchased a 90% or better 28-2 with a broken sight blade and football target stocks for $485 OTD. After replacing the sight it is definitely better than 90%.
A year ago a comparable gun - with a little more wear, with magnas on it was sold at a different local shop for $575.

Boy the HP's sure have come up in price these past few years.

About 3 years ago, I paid $475 plus tax for my 28-2 with 6"bbl in excellent condition with a very small amount of visible wear. Had the Magnas on it too. This was not a private sale, it was at my LGS. I wasn't looking for an HP, but I figured that just about ANY P&R N-frame in even descent shape was a steal at under $500. I couldn't pass it up.
