Question model 29
I just saw a model 29 no dash that the serial number was S then it looked like a small zero then the rest of the number. The gun was blue and 6 1/2 inch barrel. Does anybody know about the first two numbers of this serial number? The second number looked almost inelligable.
Thanks,
Jay

Jay, the S prefix ran out about 1970 when the prefix changed to an N. There would normally be 6 digits after the S. I'm not sure what the zero immediately following the S would indicate. A photo of the serial on the butt would be a big help.

S prefix serial numbers for the 44 Magnum range from the S130000s (1956) to the S333000s (1969). The best place to look at the serial number is on the bottom of the grip frame.

It was on the bottom of yoke(same spot as my 29-10). It was really hard to read. The gun was $1,100 in what looked like perfect condition. I saw the the S then the next number looked like a small half zero, then the rest. It had the Coke grips and near the serial number it said 29.

If it is an original finish in "perfect condition" no dash 29 (four screw?) with cokes it is a great deal at $1100. As others said, check the SN on the butt; and be sure it is not a re-blue finish. Good luck.

44 Magnums stamped MOD-29 in the yoke cut began at approximately serial number S184000 and ended at approximately S221000.

Serial numbers on the bottom of the grip frame are pretty deeply stamped and very clear. If that is difficult to read, I would be very careful. Check the to see if there is a serial number on the back of the cylinder or underneath the extractor rod. Early ones had the serial number stamped in the barrel lug too.
