Here is my Model 15-3, s/n K 905790, year 1969, 4 inch, with factory code PC stocks.

Great shooter, great gun, fits perfect into my collection of S&W's finest handguns!

Year is from SCSW 4th (maybe 3rd...can't remember and do not have my library with me), have not Lettered as I usually only Letter the real old ones, or higher value collector grade, so don't know the month for sure, but that would only be a ship date, not a manufacture date.

I don't know the shipping date but I believe it was manufactured in 1975 and shipped to the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department S/N 8K67516.

This Combat masterpiece was brought to our LGS my a young fellow who had inherited it.
He just wanted fast cash. They gave him $100 for it, IIRC.
Store called me to help identify it.
Was in the box with receipt and paperwork from Evaluators, Ltd. of Quantico, VA.
Dated to 1951. This one went into the store owner's collection.

K817988 lives here. I always figured it shipped about 1967. This thread makes me wonder if it's a year or two later than that.

I completely agree, I have two of them.. Model 15-3 and 15-4. Workmanship, weight and balance is unequaled by today's revolvers.

I still carry them when weather permits.

Model 15-3, Serial# 6K80795, nickel with 2” barrel, made in 1975 per SCSW. This gun has a serrated trigger which the SCSW indicates has been “reported but not verified”. I have not lettered this gun.

acquired this S&W model 15 weapon back in '71 prior to going into police work. The owners instruction care pamphlet is marked 3-67 on the bottom of the back page. Used this weapon for security detail initially, and then for several years in police work until the department mandated the switch over to a S&W model 19 around '85. I couldn't guess how many rounds have been put through this weapon; but, it will still put the first one on the X.

Default Model 15-2 in Australia

Please find attached some photos of my Model 15-2. The serial number is K775071. The gun was refinished by the S&W Importer here in Sydney. I was told by the previous owner that it is meant to be Ex-LAPD. There are no markings to suggest LAPD prior ownership. I have never really looked into this further.

I purchased this Model 15-2 so I could use it to compete in the Pistol Class of a Combined Services Match shot here in Australia.

Okay, I'll play. Here are a few pictures of my K38 Combat masterpiece. It is not perfect, it is not the best, but it is all matching, and it is mine. I do not know when it was shipped, nor where. I am just happy to possess it currently. Please, feel free to add it to the data base.

I gots one! Today! Yea!!

Nickeled (chromed) Serial Number k969930 which seems to mean 1970, It needs a cleaning, a bit of polish, and a lot of shooting.

Nice 2 1/2 lb SA trigger and 9 poundish DA.

I've got some questions about the nickel job, but I'll do that in another thread and add some pictures..

This 15-4 is stamped W.L.E.A. (Wyo. Law Enforcement Academy), but that's Paul Harvey's "The rest of the story." As the academy armor's story goes a collection of these were only issued to students as back-ups if an student's gun malfunctioned. The Wyo. Department of Corrections Office of Pardon and Parole originally had the Model 15s and donated them to the academy "about 20 years ago," according to the armor. A bit more than a year ago the academy traded them for new semi-automatics so there have been a few floating around the shows this year. I'm still waiting to hear from Pardon and Parole whether they bought the guns new. If so I might letter it. SN 81K8928 from around 1980.

I shot mine for the first time yesterday, after buying it last week, It's a shooter for sure, First 6 rounds at 30 feet, really two three round groups, I shot three and adjusted my hold and shot 3 more, It's an awesome performing 65 year old!

The Model 15 is indeed a very fine .38 Special revolver. I'm quite proud of my 15-3, shipped in 1971:

HOWEVER, I do not agree that it's the best that S&W has done in that caliber. It can be improved in one major respect - it could be made out of STAINLESS STEEL!

S&W did just that, introducing the stainless version of the Model 15 in 1972. It was the Model 67 Stainless Combat Masterpiece. My 67-1 was shipped in April of 1978. A Model 15, but made of stainless, to me, represents the true pinnacle of the breed.

My nickel 15-4 #22K83XX. The charts I've seen say 1977, but I bought it new in Houston, TX in 1980. I guess it could have floated around for three years, being nickel wasn't quite as popular? Plus things did not move as fast back in the day. Or the dates they list are a bit off. I do have the box and the original grips and the receipt.

Default My first centerfire firearm

This is my first centerfire firearm, a K-38 Combat Masterpiece. It is shown in a Cherry wood case that I built for it, along with all the accoutrements that i'v gathered for it over the years. It's ready to pass on to my Son, when I'm through with it. It has a target trigger, target hammer, white outline rear sight, red ramp front sight, one of the smoothest S&W triggers I'v ever pulled, set to 44oz. as per my specifications, and custom grips made from fiddle back maple wood from trees planted in our back yard 60+ years ago by my wife, and late Mother. the trees had to be removed , a few years ago, and some wood, from them used to make the grips. There is a much longer story about this Mod. 15, gathered over the years, since I bought it in 1953, and used continuously the 64 years since. I'v posted it before, on this forum, and won't repeat it. Thanks for sharing.

Dang store owners! They get first choice!

Here is my 1961 model 15-1 that I had acquired from the original owner in my home town here in CA approximately 10 years ago in NIB condition. At that time model 15's were only available to LEO's except if you were lucky to find one from a private party to enable a legal PPT. It took me a long time to discover my beautiful 15-1 and this is the reason I had chosen to keep it unfired in my collection:

New to S&W forum. Was given a K Frame 38 with a 4 inch barrel. No S/N like any of the formats I've seen listed. The only numbers on it are 5908 0n the bottom of the butt and 5540 on the front of the grip strap. Thye pistol was in horrible condition (left in a plastic bag in a Miami garage for decades). The pistol has adjustable target sight on rear marked "Micro" and a large blade sight on front also marked "micro" Is this an S&W model??

Many thanks.

Welcome to the Forum. Would need pictures to help ID your revolver. The numbers you posted would not be S&W serial or model numbers on a K-38 revolver. S&W put model numbers in crane/yoke area after 1957. Examples of model #'s: 15, 15-1, 15-2, etc.

A great thread! Thanks for starting it, and I agree with the OP that the K-38 CM is the best .38 revolver ever. Recently bought a Colt Diamondback - beautiful shape, made in 1968, and I love it, but I'm afraid it just isn't on par with the Combat Masterpiece.

I feel bad, though - I have four Combat Masterpieces (two of them model 15's) but no factory letters or original paperwork to verify their shipping dates, so I can contribute nothing to the thread. You have my moral support, though.

Another adherent to the ubiquity and purposefulness of one of Smith and Wesson's premier revolvers! I have had a number of them through the years....
Became an aficionado at age 21 when I was issued one by the County of Los Angeles Sheriff's Department. The first gun I had ever "owned"....well, actually owned by the county....but "my" gun. June 1974 and as not a marked "SHERIFF Dept" one and never heard (or saw) of markings on one until seeing a photo of one on the forum so marked...!
Have a number of them now. I seem to buy them when I find one for sale.... an illness for certain.... I regret 3 that I no longer own and lament their presence in my life.....
A 2" blue model that I carried off duty when assigned to L.A. Central Jail.
A pre-57 blue 5 screw that I sold to a friend who declines to sell it back...
A blue 15-2 that I brought up to Oregon from L.A. modified to DAO which I believed to have been an L.A.P.D. modified version and I carried on my second agency until we transitioned to autos and very stupidly sold.....A fine revolver. A pleasure to own and shoot.

Default I think I have a Combat Masterpiece, that was my father's service weapon

Hello,
I believe that I have a Combat Masterpiece that was my father's service weapon when he served as a Lieutenant with the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department from the early to mid
60's til 1986. Serial Number K 113746 which dates to 1951. I have a couple of pictures one will show the left stock ground down for what i believe to for a speedloader. I believe the grips are aftermarket? Any thoughts on it will be more than welcomed.
Thanks, Mark

I just picked up a nice 15-3 yesterday. I am not sure when it was made, but the serial number is 3K15xxx.

I was issued one of these when I got hired on by the local Sheriff’s Office back in 1980…
