What can you tell me about my new to me 8 3/8" 17-3. Ser. # 12K763X. Ship date how rare? Thanks folks.

Made in 1977, near the end of the dash 3 production. They are not at all rare, although the 8 3/8" barrel is not nearly as common as the 6".

I always wanted a 17 and always liked the 8 3/8". Finally got both.

I saw a Model 17-3 with the 8 3/8" barrel at a gun show last year. It was ANIB, tools and all accessories were in the box. The asking price was, as I recall, $1250. I passed, but I think the price was relatively within reason. I'm not fond of the extra-long barrels, but some guys like them a lot. For me, they just do not balance well and they are too long to comfortably carry in a holster.
