LOVE THIS MODEL 10
Not as pretty as my models 19 or 67. Not as powerful as my
model 29. Not as small & light as my 642. But ever since 1899,
as the M&P and later as model 10, it has been the workhorse
for American law enforcement.
Boise's finest carried it back in the 60s and 70s. Jim Cirillo
used it on the NYPD Stakeout Unit, with "satisfactory" results
about 19 times.
My 10-6 with heavy "bull" barrel and original wood is shown
below left.
2nd from left it is lounging in a carved Lawrence Challenger.
3rd from left relaxing in Heiser's carved #757 on a Simply
Rugged belt and a S&W knife.
4th from left hosted by Bianchi's #3 with "dog ear".
5th from left an old Heiser F.B.I. holster with the elongated
triple H logo, but prior to model numbers. But it is identical
to the 457.

I agree with everything that you said...except that your 10-6 isn't as pretty as a 19 or 67. It is easily as pretty so, I must respectfully disagree. The classic smooth lines of a heavy barrel model 10 are the essence of S&W design because of it's simplicity rather than in spite if it. Of course, this is my opinion and we all know what is said about opinions.

While I've never cared much for the heavy barrel Model 10's, I do like the classic standard barrel guns. I've got two now...have owned several others at various times.
This one, a "no dash" from 1960 shows some abuse, or neglect.
Whereas this one, a 10-5 looks barely used.
There was a time, when I was young and under the spell of Jeff Cooper and the IPSC crowd that I looked down my nose at the Model 10. It was "quaint and old fashioned." Now that I'm "quaint and old fashioned" myself, I'm glad I discovered them.

Perhaps I mis-spoke (or mis-wrote). The model 10 is, as you
say, beautiful in it's simplicity. Reminds me of the old song
"I overlooked an orchid while searching for a rose".
Over on Firearms & Knives - Other Brands there is a thread
titled "The best all around do everything pistol". Guess what
got my vote. The model 10.

Well, up to the 1980s or '90s, when the bottom feeders took over.

I'm easing into the Model 10's and enjoying every minute of it.
First was the 1983 Model 10-7
image hosting over 5mb
Then a homeless 1981 Model 10-8 called to me
adult photo hosting
Years passed and I thought I was safe until the 1971 Model 10-5 with the 5 inch barrel yelled at me from across the street
image upload no compression
and finally a 1967 10-5 Nickle somehow snuck into the corral
picture hosting
Every one is a good shooter. Especially the 10-8.

Nice 10! I like heavy barrel fixed sight K frames. Don't have a 10, like that now. Do have a 13-2, and a 64-3, that fit the bill. Bob

I got my Dad's Model 10-5 when he passed away and last year I gave it to my brother. He just got into guns about 10 years ago and because he wasn't into guns before that my Dad gave me all of his guns.

Nice smiths all even those called "abused or neglected" in one post look pretty good to me! I do not currently have a 10 but hope to remedy that soon. ( probably with multiples!) since I moved to the south west it has been hard to find a gun shop that has more than even a handful of used revolvers, so pickings seem slim at the moment and I am patient and refuse to over pay. I prefer shooter quality guns as I use mine a lot. My current favorite is a 4" combat masterpiece from the early 50's, and it would be my choice for the most versatile suitable for open or concealed carry and can be used for all the types of competitive shooting I use a centerfire for. I do relent and use a bottom feeder for uspsa though.
The simple elegance accuracy reliability and durability of the model 10 ( any k frame really) in my mind is unsurpassed

When I was a NYPD officer in the mid 80's the old timers who were retiring would sell us their model 10s for $20-$25. Who wanted those antiques back then. I should have picked up a few.

I also find the fixed sight K frames to be my favorites!
I have a Model 10 and three Model 64's, and a Model 13 and a Model 65 3".
I'm always looking for more of them.

That's a good looking holster under there also. Can you
show a little more of it? The revolver is the cat's meow.

Phil:
I too am an admirer of this wonderful all-around workhorse. I have a couple that I used for years as training guns:
Edit: Sorry...forgot to state that they are 10-8s. From the early 1980s.
Best Regards, Les

I'm a fan too! Here's my 10-5 with a five inch barrel in nickel. It was issued to the Detroit Police ca. 1977.

Howdy
I have lots of 38 M&P revolvers, but only two Model 10s.
This first one I bought about 20 years ago. A 10-5. Best deal I ever got on a S&W, $125 out the door. I don't care for the bull barreled models, I prefer the old tapered barrels. I have always assumed this one was a police trade in. The number stamped above the trigger guard looks like a police armorer's inventory number.
I ran into this 10-5 just last year. Just about identical to the other one, I only grabbed it on a whim.
One of these days I'd like to find a nice Model 10 with a 6" tapered barrel.

My best friend's father gave me this 10-5 for my 16th birthday. His son and I still shoot it now and then. It was my favorite gun for a lot of years.
