18-4 took a ride home
I picked up a 18-4 today, came out of a father inlaw. you cant tell if it was shot, grips have never been removed from the gun. Just a nice gun to shoot.

To the OP, you will enjoy that 18-4. I've had one for many years and it has been great for beginning shooters, like my son when he was young and now my grandsons.
And, Congratulations Art on your 18,000th post!

Hiram Abiff himself would be proud to own that fine rimfire!
I have a Mod 18 that gets out for a range session once in awhile ...
Old Past Masters have to go easy on the recoil!

Very nice, you will enjoy that 18-4
There are two different variations of the 18-4, the early ones have a pinned barrel and a large R side TM where later versions have a smaller L side TM and no barrel pin.
The 18-4 was the end of the line for the 4" tapered barrel Combat Masterpiece until it was reintroduced in the MIM era .
After the 18-4 run S&W began offering the Model 17-5 in 4", 6" and 8 3/8" lengths instead.

Does your FIL like you? I were you, and the nickel 10 is in great shape, I'd give him the extra $50. Does it have the tapered barrel or heavy?

Very nice you will enjoy that one. A number of years ago I came across a very nice 18-3 the dang thing looked unfired but no box, as I did not have an 18 it came home with me. It turned out to be a very frustrating little beast as it would not shoot worth a hoot compared to my K-22's and 17's that are very good shooters. After trying a lot of different brands of ammo I finally just put it in the safe and sorta forgot I had it.
Well a few years ago I gave it another try, standard velocity, high velocity, target grade ammo still no joy. And then I found it, Winchester X-pert, holy cow it ate it up with good accuracy, bought five "bricks" (this was just before the great .22lr shortage) and ear marked them for the 18. It now gets to play with the other .22's! Just shows one that when it comes to .22lr firearms some can be picky about what they like to eat.

Here's mine, a combat masterpiece, an 18-2 with combats and an 18-3. I don't have an 18-4, yet.
The well used 18-2 is my go to .22 revolver.
