Model 27, Wyoming, Michigan PD, 1962
A good friend gave me this stunning Model 27 as a retirement gift. It had no grips, so I added a nice set of cokes. Mr Jinks' letter came this week, so it is time for show and tell.
The letter confirms the red ramp front but does not confirm the white outline rear. The Target trigger and hammer were added later.
Interesting that it was ordered through HH Harris in Chicago for the police department in Wyoming, MI (very near Grand Rapids). Also interesting that it is in such pristine condition for a LE gun. Perhaps it was a retirement gift or something for competition?
At any rate, it is an heirloom in my family now. Shipped less than two months after my birth.

The city of Wyoming MI is by no means a large metropolis, but they had twenty-seven police officers in 1960.
City of Wyoming - Police Department History
It seems likely the two revolvers were a special purchase for target competition or just something a couple of officers wanted that the department obligingly ordered for them to secure the best possible price.

My PD had a program like that. You got a purchase order from City Hall and bought the gun from either a gun shop or through the police uniform supplier. No sales tax on city bought gun.
The gun was paid for at $10 a payday until paid off.

We have been friends since one of us was too young to drive (me). Shooting and hunting and guns are 85% of our every conversation and he once identified himself as a "Smith & Wesson snob". Good man and great friend.

Neat Model 27 and IIRC its at the very end of the no dash run .
Also interesting that it has "Coke" stocks and a Baughman ramp as most 6.5"ers I have seen have the Patridge FS blade.
PS Congrats on your retirement, I just had my 1 year anniversary after retiring last year...Loving It !

That's a beauty! I always wanted a 6-1/2" M27... maybe someday.
Congratulations on your new revolver.

What a fine gift. Wasn't H.H. Harris the company that special ordered 5" pre Model or model 29s? Or was it 5" Model 24s? Seems I read that by Skelton or Keith.

Yes, HH Harris was the firm that special ordered most of the rare 5" 44s. Interesting that the Michigan PD went through them for these guns.

Looking over the Wyoming PD History (Thank you Jack Flash), it seems marksmanship is a valued asset. Most departments in my state do not even try to field a pistol team. For those that do, winning the Governors Trophy is a huge achievement.
"The Wyoming Police Department Pistol Team won the Governor’s Trophy in 1994. They took first place for the fifth time competing with several hundred Officers from numerous departments throughout the State of Michigan. Also in 1994, Chief Lowell E. Henline bids farewell as he retires after a twenty-two year tenure as Chief of Police."

That's a beautiful 27 for sure. Wyoming PD always shot good at the Governor's Matches. Our team shot in a different class, but I remember well Wyoming's team.
Bullseye shooting. Most rookies would not even recognize that term today. Probably think it refers to shooting a stray cow.
