Smile P&R Model 66 Appreciation

I just wanted to share my collection of Model 66's. A few weeks back, after over a year of waiting for the right one, I was able to snag a nice 66-1 2.5" at a local show. I really appreciate the fine quality and craftsmanship that went into these guns back in the day. The stainless appearance of these K-frame 66's just simply attracts me to them. I have a few model 19's as well, but for some reason I seem to favor the 66's. They seem to produce a slightly better grouping on paper, at least to me. I still love my 19's, but I don't see myself letting any one of these 66's go.

The 2.5" is a 66-1, shipped in 1980.
The 4" is an earlier 66 no dash, shipped in 1973 with stainless sights.
The 6" is a 66-1, shipped in 1979. This one has a 6 1/8" barrel mentioned in SCSW4 as being pretty uncommon.

Who else here has love for the model 66!? I'd love to see some more of those 66 collections. Thanks for allowing me to share my small family of 66's.

Sorry, no pics but I have a 2 1/2" Model 66-1 and a 4" Model 66 no dash with stainless sights ! Love them both.
As a side note, I have never seen a 6" bbl Model 66 in person!

I need a P&R model 66.

They are tricky to find.
Even non P&R model 66's are going for top dollar now.

I like your collection.

This 66 was delivered to the Shelby County Sheriff's Department in October of 1972. Back in the 70's if you were in law enforcement this was the rig you really wanted.

I've got a -2 from around 1983 that I picked up the end of last year. They are amazing guns. I've always said that Rick on the Walking Dead should be carrying a M66 instead of a Colt Python. Few people know that they broke the hammer and trigger on Rick's Python early last year. They had to come here to Macon to buy another Python for parts to fix Rick's gun. So now I can say I have seen and handled Rick's parts gun. There is no way you could ever break the hammer and/or trigger on a Model 66.

Default My Only P&R 66

is this 4 inch, no dash.

It has the best timing/lockup of any Smith I own.

I'm down to one P&R 66, this 66-1 marked with the emblem of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. So much fun to shoot, and great to look at too!

I agree Doc. That's pretty neat that you've been involved with the show. I do recall spotting a few random Smith's make appearances in the series...perhaps a 10 snub and 586 if I recall correctly.

Funny thing is as I am reading this thread, I have my 66-2 2 1/2" by my side. The 66 ND 2 1/2" and 66-1 4" are tucked away for the night in the safe. Yes, we really like our 66's and for good reason.

I have one, a 66-1 believe it is a 4 inch barrel. Bought it many years ago with a period correct, but incorrect serial numbered box tools and paperwork. Paid $275 for it, and the only reason I remember how much I paid is my buddy flipped out that I paid that much for an old useless revolver. He insisted I got ripped off.

Had a chance to buy one with the silver sights like Nedroe's, basically ANIB. Guy wanted 800 and he was willing to take 775. I screwed around trying to get him to seven and he sold it. Wish I would have got that one. Oh well, another one will come along. But, it will probably be a grand !

Doc, I'm glad Rick DIDN'T carry a 66. Can you imagine what they'd cost now???

Model 66, K949140, one of the 100 built in 1970 to test the new tooling for this model. Kept in the factory collection for five years and shipped in 1975. Fitted with a target hammer and shipped in a silver box.

Very nice group of 66s! The 66 was my first Smith, and what started my interest in S&W. The early p&r versions are also my favorite.

Both no dash 66s. 4" from '71, and snub from '75.

If you happen to know anything more about how many of the 3" P&R's there might be, I would love to know! I am sensing a Grail gun that has jumped to the top of my list!

But shipped in a blue box.

I'd be tickled to find a nice 3" 66, unfortunately I've never run across one. Anyone have a rough guess as to how many 3" P&R 66's were produced? I know there were significantly more -2 and -3's made in the 3" configuration, however I've heard of the rare P&R 3" such as Model39's. Very nice!

It's great to see all these 66's!
