Original Boxes, how do you tell
Is this box the original to this Model 34-1? Someone is trying to sell me this revolver and he contends that it is, but isn't the serial number different on the box and the butt of the revolver?

Yes, boxes were marked with the serial number of the gun inside.
Yours don't match.

The box isn't original to the gun. If the seller is maintaining that it is, then he is;
1. Dishonest
2. Very Stupid
3. Both

The serial number on the box is from approx. 1977. The gun is from 1963ish maybe 64.

The box may be an original S&W box for the same model, just not the same gun.
I have a similar situation with a model 36 no dash. I purchased the gun new in 1963. It was subsequently stolen in a burglary in the 1980s but I still had the box. I replaced the gun with an identical one shipped in 1962. Everything on the box label is the same except the serial number.

The SN on the box is M97804. It is the last line above "SMITH & WESSON".
Sometimes the SN is written on the bottom of the box in grease pencil.

To answer the OP's question: No. The box is for a Model 34-1 s/n M97804. It was blue with a 4" barrel and standard stocks.
Your gun was not shipped in that box.
