Default Grip question

Hey guys. I've decided that the target grips on my Model 19 feel a little big in my hand, and I'd like to go with service grips like these at Midway. It says that they are factory grips, but it says Dymondwood rather than walnut. What exactly is Dymondwood, and are these actually S&W factory grips? If not, what would be a good source for a set of service grips?

It is a laminated stack of dyed Birch wood. Very strong but not really wood as you would think it to be.

Dymondwood = wood laminate. Original K frame square butt Magna style solid wood stocks are plentiful and watching the Wanted to Sell (or posting a Wanted to Buy ad) should find you a set pretty quickly.

Dymondwood is a laminate, usually beech or birch, stained to look like walnut or whatever. These are probably manufactured by Altamont who is/was a supplier to S&W for OE grips, so not lying, but I think of factory grips as being made by S&W and you'd be looking for a set of Magnas.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

S&W has been selling Altamont's version of Magna Stocks since S&W quit making their own wood stocks about 20 years ago. Naming them correctly Service stocks do not cover any of the side plate or the frame on the opposite side. When civilian sales were resumed at the end of WW II Service stocks were superseded by Magna Stocks that extend up higher. S&W made Magna Stocks are frequently sold in the classifieds here, on eBay and other internet sites. Nearly all of them are solid walnut.

For me a grip adapter filling the space between the trigger guard and front strap makes a big improvement to Magnas. The wood target stock S&W has been selling in recent years fills that space and they do not flare out at the bottom like S&W made Target Stocks did. Herrett's Shooting Stars share those traits. Both of them work well for me.

If you can't find something in the classifieds here, try ebay. You can pick up some nice stocks at a reasonable price if you are patient. This set is an excellent example. (round butt K) They were just under $35 shipped. Bob
