Hi guys - I'm a newbie just starting my collection and could use your help evaluating a Model 66 I'm thinking about buying.
It's a Model 66 no-dash 4" in pristine condition but with no box or papers. Looks like it may have the original stainless front sight, though. Pics are attached.
The guy won't budge off $850. Should I save my funds and wait for another one to come along, or jump on it?
I personally think the price is a bit high. The Model 66 is a desirable revolver but not a rare one It seems the 66 no dash and the 66-1 are the preferred editions. It also seems the shorter 2 & 1/2" barrel brings the higher prices. There is a rare 3" version. I paid $450 plus a buyers premium and sales tax for my 66-2 last year with the short barrel
I would look and see what they are selling for on gunbroker and think about the fact you will normally have to pay shipping and FFL fees.
I am picking up a 66-2, in 4 inch, at much less than the price they want for yours. But the one that I am getting may not be in as good of condition as yours.....I only have a couple of blurry pictures from the seller but asking price for this one is 650.
Yeah thats optimistic in what is now a buyers market. I went to a local gun and pawn and the case is full of revolvers, some with box, for much less. Held a model 19-2 for $529 in VG condition and decided to pass on that. I think gun prices are gonna take a big hit the next 7 years

Who has 7 years........my clock is on the unwind so time is not my friend. If it is what you want go negotiate for it and see what happens can't hurt. You may have more time than me so I snag what I want when I see it........but even at that price I would pass and keep looking there are so many other things out there that I want to add to my accumulation, shoot and handle before I leave this earth........it is later than we think.

Lol
OP already said he wouldnt budge.
I am pretty sure S&W produced over 6 million K frames so if you want to pay over market price/blue book then by all means do so. I have multiple hobbies that require budgeting.
Pinned and recessed tend to bring a premium...... no dash and -1s only
Stainless rear sight on some no dash guns bring a premium. many were switched out to a blue rear sight....................
$850 seems a bit high...... but .... when's the last time you saw one locally.
Mine were bought locally about 17-20 years ago...................
Ignore the "Blue Book" prices ...... always out of date by publication.
SCS&W 4th ed. published fall 2016........66 in ANIB condition $800...with $100 premium for the stainless rear sight.
Generally I'd advise not to lose a gun you really want over $50-100....... cus you may not see another for years and then at an even higher price.........

Sellers always say they won't budge but when I show up with cash in hand and make an offer they usually accept. I was looking a BHP and the guy was set on 750 bucks. When I pointed out some surface rust I made a low ball offer of 600-625, I can't recall but we settled on 645 dollars......but I told him if we could not negotiate a better deal I would just save up my money for a better condition one.....if they want you to walk then walk. We all have multiple hobbies and we have to make choices. And yes there were plenty of guns produced but how many actually show up locally to you. Not in my area that is for sure. The one that I am going to pick up is 50 miles from me.

Its not ANIB..nor a stainless rear..what does it say about a 95% gun without box? Just curious.

"Excellent" .. $575
Very Good.... $350
Location also has a big impact on price...... places like Calf and Mass. often have limited local supply, can't 'import" guns into their States.....
Here in W. Pa....... small rural gun shops prices can be $50 to as much as $200 less than you'd find the same gun in one in a more affluent suburb of "The Burgh"
Im in Charlotte NC and the gun cases are full of revolvers every time I visit gun and pawns or Hyatts which claims to be Americas largest gun store 🙄😃
The entire bottom shelf at Beltway Gun and Pawn had a slew of Smiths in the box for less than 800...i was only looking for a model 19 thus the 529 dollar gun
I just bought a 28-2 and it was expensive. You are right location is everything. I live in California so we are very limited. So all you guys with extra revolvers should vacation in California and leave a few here! LOL!
I agree that price is top end for that gun especially without the box, etc. I'd expect it to be virtually free of scratches, wear marks etc. BUT (lol) if it's a gun you're really wanting and as you say it is local, than as mentioned show up with cash in hand to see if you can swing a better deal.
As for Beltway, the last time I stopped in there last summer with a copy of my ffl dealer's license in one hand and cash in the other the older Smiths they had were all very well used and priced ridiculously high. My timing must've been off.
Hard to tell from the blurry pics but that 66 looks to have been polished,
The SS rear site changed to black SS around 1975 IIRC and the 66-1 came out around 1977.
I would have no problem paying $850 for a LNIB 1970-75 gun with SS rear site,
A polished 1976 with black rear site is more like a $500 gun IMO.
I picked up a 66 several years ago at a local pawn shop no box and some aftermarket wood hogue grips. I think I paid $425, that was expensive then, I bought it as a shooter and it still serves its purpose very well. I have since heard good and bad about the stainless sights but they don't bother me and I don't remember that being an issue when I purchased it. There were a lot of 66 and 19's made if you find the one that floats your boat buy it. As long as it is mechanically sound, clean bore, clean cylinder, well taken care of and meets your appearance standards it will last another lifetime.
I'd say that price is too high, for a 4" anyway. Last summer here in SE PA I bought a 1975 vintage 66, no box but very clean and tight, for $620. I'd say around $600-$650 is a good average for a 4". Now the 2.5" is another story. Just saw a 66-1 snub in less than mint condition, without box or original grips, bring $850 at an auction. I've also seen two mint 66-1 snubs at recent shows for $875.

If it's a buyer's market (which is news to me), you should tell Beltway that.
They have 700 ended auctions for S&W revolvers on gunbroker, and I went thru 10 pages to find 3 that actually met their reserve and sold. One was a 4" 66-2 for $700.
I bid on their 25-10 for three auctions and never did hit their reserve and it's been listed three times since. Tell them it's a buyer's market. LOL
PS I checked their auctions again, and they have a model 19-2. It has a bid of $675 and the reserve isn't met. So your $529 example must be a real dandy.

Dunno about their online auctions as Im local to them. I also dont look at Hyatts "online" sales
How many of those 700 ended auctions were during Obamas reign of gungrabbyness?
The model 19-2 was a 6" had a turn line and target stocks and was about 90% NRA condition
The completed listings cover the last three months.
So Obama covers the Dec 8 - Jan 20 time frame.
Post the link to their gunbroker listings. I think we may be talking about 2 different sellers. They have a website but no mention or link to their auctions. Also the gun I handled on Monday isnt listed on the website either.
The person I dealt with sold me a lb of bullseye powder and a .35 rem crimp die and admitted that they werent selling guns for much of a margin anymore thanks to worlds best gun salesman retiring on Jan 20th.
At that price he is forcing you to decide how bad you want it. I hate it when that happens. I have a ND circa '76, w/black rear site that I polished because that is how I like 'em, and I never plan to sell it. They are fun to shoot. I see plenty of well used 686's and 64's in my area but never any 66's. When I think about how fast I blow through $100 on most weekends I think I would jump on it in that condition. Then the wife and I would just stay home and rent movies for a couple of weekends. Of course as you guys know - that's easy for me to say!

How many Beltway Gun and Pawn in Charlotte NC could there be?
Anyway, I wasn't bashing them, only debating your statement about gun prices.
While AR's and plastic fantastics' are going a dime a dozen, 20th century S&W revolvers are not suffering from a decline in value. This is, after all, the 1961-80 revolver subforum.

A while back, I bought one off this Forum. It had Ahrens stocks on it so my buddy gave me a nice set of Goncalo Alves to put on it. It is a early 4K numbered gun with all stainless sights. Near 98% condition. I bought it for the collectibility of it, not as a shooter. They are getting scarcer every passing day. I gave $750 shipped for it and never looked back. Now has an original box and tools. IMHO, the Combat Magnum, the M19, and M66 are the best looking smiths ever made. Especially the early Combat Magnum. Big Larry
