Default Model 10 3 1/2" tapered barrel?

Was there such a thing?

Just saw a model 10-2 at my lgs. It looked at first to be a 3", but seemed a bit too long. Compared it to a model 64 4"HB and it was about a half inch shorter.

I've not heard of one, but that doesn't mean anything. I don't have the standard catalog handy, so I can't say for sure. I have a 3" model 10 from the late 60's, and those are relatively rare. Three and a half would be very much so. Compare the barrel roll marks with a 4" version of the same era - if they match, it's possible the barrel has been cut down from 4".

I don't think it came in that length from the factory; it may have been shortened and the front sight relocated.

If it was chopped, someone did a great job. Can't imagine going through the trouble of taking off just 1/2" though. Pretty good shape overall, it was "marked down" to $349 so I left it. Still curious about it.

Love to see pictures if you can. Also, what is the shop asking for the gun? If the barrel has been shortened, maybe you could work a deal on it.

I'm curious why $349 wasn't a great buy. Was it in bad shape?

The Model 10 was offered in 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, and 6 inch lengths for sure. Maybe more on special order. That said, I have never heard of a 3.5 inch Model 10.

Is the barrel the tapered barrel, or the heavy barrel?

I have a Combat Masterpiece (Pre model 15) from 1950 that has a chopped off 3.5” barrel. Mine is definitely not factory. Has a non-S&W crown and the roll stamp starts right at the muzzle.
Maybe it was just the “thing to do” in those days.

Good pictures of the crown, front sight and roll stamp would help us figure it out. Most likely the barrel was shortened. Another possible reason for shortening could have been to get rid or a defect like a bulge near the muzzle or deep rust pits that could not be polished off before a reblue.

If it was shortened, it more likely came down from 5 or 6 inches. People also overestimate the difficulty. I've had a couple of rifles shortened in the past; a professional gunsmith will make it look like original.

1. Measure
2. If 3" BUY!
3. If/then offer it to the collectors collective here on the channel.

Geoff
Who is still kicking himself over the M65 3" he didn't buy at $350 years ago.

....
I don't think the OP would identify it specifically as a 10-2 unless it were actually so stamped, precluding an ex-BSR, even a nice job like yours .

Measure the barrel from the cylinder to the end of the muzzle. I am betting it is something like 3.75" or slightly longer. If so, it is a four inch barrel, within factory tolerances.
