Model 60 gun show buy with box...year of mfg?
Made a package deal with a guy at a show today for a 19-2 nickel with a box and this model 60 with original box.Pd $400 for the 60. It has non original stocks on it..but they are quite comfortable,so not a deal breaker for me.The stocks show more wear than the revolver. I would say this has spent most of it's time sitting in a draw in a box as not much wear on any of the moving parts or cosmetically worn.
I was wondering if anyone can narrow down the year of manufacture better than 1965-1968. I'd love to find a first year model 60..the beginning of all stainless steel S&Ws! Anyway..this is serial #478752..so probably not low enough to be first year. Also..anyone have an idea of the brand of stocks on this? They are RB to SB conversions and thumb rests on both sides. For those with 2 thumbs on one hand I guess..

It's an early one, likely 1966, with the standard matte finish and satin chromed hammer/trigger. The U.S. Steel box sticker was only seen on the early guns too. The stocks appear to be Herrett's. Nice find!

To me, the grips look like Herrett Shooting Star grips.

Darn nice looking 60. Yup, the grips are Herretts , Shooting Stars, R-C-S.
Good deal. Best.

Here is a shot of the 19-2..the finish is stunning. The box is stamped Sept 1974 inside..so probably correct ship date? Ser# K781864, non original stocks. These say Altamont on them and are really comfy. Target hammer and smooth wide target trigger. Really nice case coloring on them. Looks like no wear. Action is superb considering it is probably stock. Another gun that just sat around in a drawer, I'd say. The rear sight is soaking in some penetrating oil as the windage screw is tight. I actually like how it looks without the rear sight! Maybe I'll put a Millett on there..hmmm..

You got a heck of a deal on that model 60, congrat's. That's also a fine model 19.
I'm liking both sets of stocks.

The dealer had just taken in a small collection of S&W revolvers. The model 29s were scooped up before the show opened,so he said...and these and a pre-model 15 were left. The pre-15 was a factory renickel and nice..but I had to choose 2 out of the 3. Hey,got to leave some behind for others! The 19-2 I had to pay $550 w/box. Stocks have a palm swell to them. Very comfortable!

K780000 would have been from 1968, so I would guess a non-matching box.

^ Yea..the model 19 box has no end label,so wasn't sure if it was original or not. Buy the gun..not the box is my motto. I wasn't leaving without that 19 though..

Yes..big E was good. Standing in 10 degrees with a 20mph wind for 20 minutes to get in was chilling....I had dressed to be indoors at 75 degrees...they always crank the heat in there. I'm usually down to my underwear after an hr. so I learned to dress accordingly. There was a line to go out into the "ammo" tent..at least a 20 minute wait as they were limiting how many could go out in the tent at one time. Silly rules about ammo because they had ONE negligent discharge 10 years ago. (I was there) Now the powers that be (the city of Springfield) have Draconian rules for the gun show: NO ammo indoors. Dumb.
The vendors had a good selection for most anyones interests, and even the mom and pop gun stores are attending again.
I bought these from a grandfather/grandson/granddaughter team.
The granddaughter did the pricing and paperwork/finances.
Grandpa handled the sales dept..and grandson filled in where needed.
Pretty cool atmosphere and people talking and smiling.
Having a gun packing President has def made a difference in attitudes concerning firearms! Lucky us!

I have since found out it is a Sept 1967 build. Not first year, but early build and all stainless built. The very early 60s were a bright polished SS finish. I'll have to keep my eyes open. The things you learn here..
