You can, but you will need to really scrub your cylinder when done because of lead and powder fouling buildup.

Long Rifle cartridges are much cheaper, so I'm not sure why you would want to shoot shorts in any gun not chambered specifically for them.

Yes, same diameter bullet and case, just 'short'er. A full-power .22 Short throws a (lighter) bullet in .22 LR velocity ranges, so no concerns about it lodging in the bore.

As Scott mentioned, the charge holes will gum up pretty quickly.

I answered this earlier not sure what happened to the post. I have a 1947 K-22 and have shot shorts, longs and long rifles in it since 1953 when my Dad first let me shoot it. Never a problem.

Actually there was one problem; the shorts would bounce off of the crows. Not the long rifles however.

It's the same deal as shooting 38 Spl in a 357 Magnum. If you shoot a lot of them fouling will build up in the chambers of the cylinder forward of where the 22 short case ends. That might make it difficult to chamber a long rifle until you clean out the fouling.
As someone else mentioned, I don't really see the utility of shooting 22 short in a revolver chambered in 22 long rifle, unless noise or something similar issue is the reason. But hey, to each his (or her) own. If you want to shoot them for no reason at all that is your call.

I have several 17’s and 617’s. One model 17 that I bought new in about 1982 is one of the most accurate revolvers that I have ever owned. I tested a ton of different .22’s through it and when I got to C.C.I. short HP’s this gun just came into its own. It has shot many groups rested at 25 yards that you could cover all six holes with a nickel. All of my kids have come up shooting .22 shorts out of that gun and I use it regularly for squirrel hunting.

I have tried other brands of shorts and probably 40 different .22 long rifles through it but this one gun just prefers the C.C.I. short HP’s. It shoots the stuff so good that I bought ten sleeves of five 100 round boxes awhile back. I would at least try shorts in your 17… you might be surprised.

You guys all grew up way too rich. There was a time when we shot what we could afford, and were happy to be able to do it. You also have the possible problem of noise and over penetration. Shorts are very low in noise and penetration, particularly from a handgun. They don't break the sound barrier. And there even is a lower level of power, the CB and BB caps don't even have powder, just the priming mix. In the entire range of things, Long rifles are significantly dirtier. The CB and BB caps are kind of clean. That can be an issue when you consider the cleaning or end up shooting some of the dirty LRs. Those have waxy lubrication while some of the lower power ones don't need it.

Lots of folks still graveyard residents after having been shot with .22 shorts. Think the original "Saturday Night Special". Ammo which, at one time, was available in every mom & pop grocery, feed store, etc., all across America (well Texas anyway) for cheap. hardcase60

Default Shorts in a S&W .22 Revolver?

They're Long Rifle length, but they definitely count as Shorts in the power category since they don't contain any powder charge. Aguila Colibri and Super Colibri are absolutely a blast to shoot! The Colibri is powered only by the primer, and the Super Colibri is "Double Primed". It's what I use in my Model 63 almost exclusively to take care of various pests around the back yard.

I've lost count of exactly how many possums and raccoons I've killed with the Super Colibri's, but it's been a bunch. Very effective, and very quiet!

Shoot all the .22 Shorts you want without worry. You may have to scrub out the chambers with a brass brush and solvent occasionally if you also wish to shoot .22 LR. Many feel it's necessary for them to cry wolf about residue buildup from Shorts in a LR chamber, but I have found it to be a negligible problem. Good grouping may or may not be another matter.

I love the colibris. I use them for casual plinking without ear protection. They are no louder than an air rifle. I also use them with new shooters so they can focus on fundamentals.

CCI Quiet is another good low power long rifle. The only thing I don't like about shorts is that they're more cumbersome to handle. Probably not so bad in a DA revolver, but man, they're hard to maneuver into my Ruger Single Six.
