Default Got a 25-5 in 4 Inch Today

I just got this nice 25-5 with a 4" barrel today. It looks to be in very decent shape, but I have a question. The barrel is pinned, but the cylinder is not recessed for the cartridges. I thought they were supposed to be both pinned and recessed, or not either. Maybe the 25-5's were different than what I thought.

Very nice find. Sadly, I am not able to help with your question.

Magnums used to have recessed cylinders.
.22 rimfire, except some really old-time revolvers from about 100 years ago or earlier, have (and still do) recessed cylinders.
Non-magnum calibers never had recessed cylinders.

The 45 Colt does not have recessed cylinder holes, magnum calibers had them.

The pinned barrel ended sometime in late 1981 for the 25-5 about the time the serial numbers changed from the N prefix to the Alpha Numeric type(AAA1234).
The good part of the change came with S&W finally fixing the oversize cylinder throat problem that plagued most Model 25 revolver made with the pinned barrel and had the S and N serial numbers

I have a LNIB 4" 25-5 shipped on the 31st day of 1986
Target Grips(no washer)stamped Dec 30 1985
.400" serrated target trigger
.500" target hammer
Toolkit w/straight cleaning rod and flat SAT with hole.

Thanks a lot for that info, guys. The serial # dates it to 1979-1980. Also, the inside of one grip has a "11 9" which I assume could mean November of 1979.

Yup, saw that on Jasons, along with a 4 inch 29-2. Both for very good prices. I thought hard about it, but now is not the time.

Very nice 25! Wish I had an older 1 such as yours. Did pick up a 25-15 at a local gun show a couple of years ago. I like all 45 revolvers. My 25. Bob

I bought a new 4" blue M25-5 in August 1980. I round butted it and carried it on duty for about a year. A while later, I sold it to my patrol LT. In 2007, I bought it back from him. He passed about 1 1/2 years later.

It won't be sold again, not while I'm living anyway.

I think it was worth the $350 I gave the LT.

You have personal history in that gun so keeping it has sentiment attached.

Only one of the 12 revolvers in my safe was there a year ago and probably none of the ones that are in it today will not be there next year.I like trading and trying new to me guns.

Nice snag! Oh, you are going to like that one. My N prefix four incher is my oldest owned N-frame, got it way back when and most likely will be the last one in my possession.. If I had to strap on a revolver and fight with it that big nasty .45 Colt 25-5 would be the one. Enjoy that one!

Nice looking piece. Congrats. I picked up a 25-2 recently that has been converted to a 44 Magnum with a 3 in barrel. Have been wanting something to shoot 44 specials for quite sometime.

I am just a sucker for a 45 caliber wheel gun! I can't seem to pass one up at a reasonable price.

Default The 25-5 is my favorite hunting sidearm and range gun

4-5" seem to be the best balance with the big N-frame, IMHO. .45 colt is my favorite cartridge of all time. I have it in many revolvers (Colt SAA, Ruger, Cimarron) and a Henry brass Big Boy too (in 45.70 also). These S&W are both 4", blued is ~1980 and the nickel is ~1982. Both with N serial numbers. I'm not a collector, only need one of each, so am considering letting the nickel go so I can move on to something else.
Poor photos but......

Very nice piece. I gave $425 for this one about four years ago knowing it had .457" throats. I just wanted a good shooter. I sent it off to S&W and for $150 they installed a new cylinder with proper .4525" throats. It shoots great.
