Model 28-2: Ever ship w/Target Hammer & Trigger? ** Update: Bought it! See photo.
Going to check out a 6" 28-2, late 1970's vintage, at lunch today. The seller says it has a target hammer & a target trigger. Were some of the 28-2 shipped with target hammers & triggers ... or was this an aftermarket modification? Thanks in advance! Appreciate the help.
** See Post #12 for "the rest of the story"! **

I have a 4" 28-2 that I bought (used) wearing all targets. Soe one here showed a box for one marked as TH TT. So I believe some were shipped that way.

My 28 no dash shipped with target hammer, but not trigger. It is from 1960. You could get them with target stocks upon request. Bob

According the the 4th edition Good Book, the 28 shipped with .400 semi-target hammer and .265 serrated trigger or .400 smooth trigger. My 28-2 has a .500 target hammer and .500 serrated target trigger..but I seriously doubt it shipped that way. I don't care..it feels just right in its present configuration, wearing Executioner Magna stags..

I have one that was purchased as LNIB. The original purchaser (on older gentleman) told the gun shop that sold me the gun that it was shipped from S&W with the target items. But, the box label doesn't reflect this.

I've never seen one with a red ramp either?

There is one at my LGS today that looks to have a semi-target hammer, and a target trigger, and Magna stocks.
I didn't ask to examine it closely though.

Never seen a 28 with a factory red ramp either. But, never say never. Notice that this one also has an exceptional polish and blue for a 28. Who really knows.

The S&W book shows that they made some for the New York State Police (serial N546xxx). These were stamped NYSP. Mine is not stamped as such. Mine is serial N542xxx.
If mine isn't original, somebody spent some decent money to fix this one up.

TH and TT can be .375",.400" or .500"
Some revolvers shipped with .500" hammer spur and a .400" serrated trigger and the original box just states TH/TT
A very good to excellent .500" hammer or trigger can be close to $100 each now on auction sites.Well worn are a lot less.

The original end label on the box is in all likelihood an accurate description of how the gun was built and left the factory regardless of what anybody's recollection is. That said, the only way to know for sure is to "letter" the gun. The gun also could have been sent back to Springfield for rework before the original retail owner took possession. Model 28's were frequently reworked by the gun shops before sale with the addition of target options such as stocks, triggers and hammers.

Ha! The OP here ... mystery solved!
Turns out my LGS screwed up when listing the gun on their web site ... it wasn't a 28-2 ... it was a 27-2.
Needless to say, it came home with me.
Been wanting a 27-2 for a while. Have a 27-3, which shoots like a dream. Now the search begins for a 27-1 ...
Thanks for all of the replies.

You guys have to remember, back in the 1970s these guns were no big deal. Hammers, triggers, sights and stocks got switched all the time.
All the guys would shoot every weekend. So Fridays were busy. I all ways had a supply of items at the bench.

When I started in law enforcement in 1976, most of the deputies that I worked with carried M19s. The set-up that most folks wanted back then were target hammers and triggers. I swapped lot a bunch between the Lee Co SO, Auburn PD and Opelika PD. I installed a bunch of red ramps and white outline rear sights too.

Just picked up this nice 28-2 today. It has the .500 trigger and .375 hammer spur. I'm guessing factory installed.
By the way serial number N2946xx. Anyone give me app ship date?

Thanks. Had to go out for a quick test run late this afternoon. Really like the .500 trigger. Action is great and accuracy is as good as anything I've ever shot. Definitely a keeper
