More from Dad's collection needing info #1
Hi Everyone,
So I dug out a few more that were in boxes. This is much more time consuming than I anticipated. I believe the model number is 53. I would like some more information on each gun, year and value please. Thanks again.

If you go online to gun auction sites and type in the make and model numbers of each of those firearms, you would be able to get a good idea of current market values. Individual regions have some variation in pricing when it comes to firearms. Looks as though your dad had some nice S&W firearms, and the fact that he kept the original boxes and paperwork adds to the value of those you've pictured. Others more knowlegeable than me should be along to give you more useful information.

The Model 53 was always a bit of an odd duck. The powerful 22 Jet Centerfire Magnum was designed as a super varmint caliber with the inserts so one could also fairly easily convert to 22 LR. Nice gun, but the rounds backed up and locked up the gun unless kept very clean.
Yours is all there, and sports the long 8 3/8" tube. The latest SCSW shows your gun worth $1250 in EXC condition and $1450 ANIB.

Your 53 (actually a 53-2 with a three screw frame and 8 3/8-inch barrel) dates to the 70s (based on the configuration of the stocks) and is probably one of the last made by S&W. In an auction it may bring $1500 plus since it has the original box and documents.

I see the place in the box for the extra cylinder . . . but don't see the cylinder. Did all Mod 53 boxes come with that space or is the space a sure sign the cylinder exists and is yet to be found?

No, all the inserts had the cut out for the extra cylinder. Some of the earlier cutouts actually had a six inch and 8 inch cutout. I agree with Bill Cross, your Model 53 would bring $1500.00. I recommend you don't shoot it, you'll want to keep it if you do! I know, I own 11 Model 53's, including one that I carried
while I was a police officer back in the 1970's and 80's.

And I thought I carried some odd handguns as a cop!

Club Gun Fan I've got to say I have seen some different guns carried by other peace officers, but never a 53 { that I knew about}, I probably would have thought it was a Model 19. I do remember an article by none other than Col. Jeff Cooper advocating using one in Latin America where Police/ Military calibers were banned.

I carried it along with a Model 29 or a Model 27. All three were pimped out with 8 3/8 inch barrels, gold bead front sight, smooth target trigger and Birdseye Maple Grips. They were done for me by employees at the plant.
